Saudi Arabia Defend Punishment of Rape Victim

Apropos the news item "Saudis defend punishment for rape victim" www.yahoonews.com made a surprising and shocking reading.

The Saudi judiciary defended a court verdict that sentenced a 19-year-old victim of a gang rape to six months in jail and 200 lashes because she was with an unrelated male when they were attacked. The Shiite Muslim woman had initially been sentenced to 90 lashes after being convicted of
violating Saudi Arabia's rigid Islamic law requiring segregation of the sexes." How sad the treatment meted out to the 19 year old lady in question.

Such double standard in punishment in the name of religion is nothing but a barbarian act. Such outrageous and barbaric act should be condemned by all right thinking people. It's not an internal matter of Saudi Arabia, but a matter concerned with the entire women community of the world. God made humans with equal rights and status, of course a bit lower position in obedience. But man made, serious regulations and rules to depress them to the ground. This is a serious matter and is followed by some religious groups. Some sections of the society very religiously follow it. This should be checked and regulated. We have just celebrated yet another Woman's Day with much pomp and pleasure. But most of the women flocks conditions and their fates are still on the balance.

The so called champions of human rights-The US and UK's-deep silence in this matter was very distressing. Such action from any country how powerful they may be should be condemned by one and all.

It's so sad when governments or any one really does this.

Stationed over in Saudi Arabia during DESERT SHIELD/STORM...a very challenging assignment! War itself isn't half as scary as a conservative mullah chasing after me with a stick, to beat me for "not having my veil properly draped." The Bedouins, individual Saudis (as well as others) were quite wonderful, but the place is very intimidating for women (esp. those from the west and other cultures.) They don't consider that you're a visitor -- they transfer their own beliefs onto anyone. The place can be very dangerous for anyone (esp. women) who step out of line! Lucky for me, two Americans kept the mullah from beating me with the stick. My Native American features may have given him cause to think I was Arabic, out consorting with some GI's! Great article! This shit makes me want to vomit! When I was stationed in the UAE, I was told by some locals that in countries such as Saudi Arabia that you could litterally have a woman killed for adultery by LYING about it! Look, George Bush invaded Iraq ostensibly because he wanted to end Saddam's tyrrany against women (like his oft-trumpeted "rape rooms"), and yet he continually applauds the Saudis for their "wonderful advancements in human rights", where, incidentally, a Christian may be legally sentenced to death by beheading for blasphemy against Allah. Uh, something WRONG with that picture??????

Uhm so she was punished for being raped in the name of Allah?
