St. Patrick's Day stands for drinking and wearing green. A few years ago I found an even better way to celebrate on that day. St. Baldrick's is a foundation dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer. St. Baldrick's foundation sets up fundraisers throughout 18 countries, and in 48 US states. Since 2000 they have raised over $34 Million.

This is not your ordinary fundraiser. They are set up in bars, firehouses, houses, and party halls for St. Patty's Day. At these events there is drinking, laughing, dancing. It's very much like your typical St. Patrick's Day party until the barbers get busy!

People volunteer to have their head's shaved. Volunteer barbers shave the heads of the participants, to much laughing and cheering from the crowd. The shavees have asked friends and families to sponsor them. At the events hats are also passed around to raise more money. These donations will go towards childhood cancer research.

The shavees doing this shows solidarity with the children who tend to lose their hair during cancer treatments. It's very touching to see a family with a sick child appreciate all being done.

I got started in St. Baldrick's when my best friend's mother passed away from cancer. Their father became a shavee to support this cause. I, along with friends and family went to a bar where almost 20 men, and 2 women shaved their heads. It was a wonderful experience. I couldn't have imagined spending St. Patty's Day a better way.

If you wish to donate, go to an event, or have your head shaved all the information is found here

So when are U gonna be a shavee, L.? BTW, Kat V, the barbers at the event might LEAVE you with an inch or two, but they are not there to give you a trim. If you're gonna go to have your hair cut, be prepared to lose it all!!!

This type of fundraising event would be a huge hit in our town! I'm heading over to the website now to learn more about this. I volunteered for Chemo Angels and "angeled" a 12 year old girl with cancer, so I'm 110% behind any program that helps kids with cancer. Thanks for sharing this info!

This is a great idea! I've donated to Lock of Love in the past. I don't think I'm ready to shave my head bald but I'll mention it to my husband! :)

I donated to a girl who is doing this again this year. I'd do it myself if I hadn't already shaved it off.

that's a fun way to do it. Back in Aussie we do something similar, we shave Policemen and women for the same cause. An excellent idea to raise money and everyone gts a giggle. great article once again. thanks
