I have a very dear friend who has suffered unimaginable abuse. She has shared with me intimate details of her childhood and the things that she experienced. Not only did she go through sexual abuse but also ritual abuse. If you met her you would never believe that she survived the horrors that she went through as she is very outgoing and normal. Fortunately to survive such atrocities, she was able to split off into other personalities.

There is much skepticism about DID, which used to be called Multiple Personality Disorder. I have no doubt in it's existance. I have seen my friend split into different personalities. At first I found it scary. I asked her when she first confided in me if I needed to be afraid of her other personalities. She told me that I needn't be afraid as she and her other multiple personalities knew I was not a threat to her. I was witness to her splitting off several times and I was not afraid.

Her biggest fear, other than the obvious, was exposing her children to her disorder. I personally and many professionals believe that this is a gift not a disorder. Professionals now believe that if children do not have the ability to split off when being severely abused that they become sociopaths, psychotic, and or crazy. Many times they become abusers themselves. This is an ability that develops early in childhood. If you know a person who has multiple personalities it is most likely that they were abused before the age of three.

I do find it interesting though that women who have been raped often cannot remember what happened to them and that is also a form of disassociation. which is a form of splitting off. Even though the victim doesn't become another personality, they still mentally leave their body.

Children can be fractured into different personalities if they are abused at a very early age. It is not multiple personality disorder it is multiple personality gift.

It's a touchy subject, even in the psychiatric field, when people say it doesn't exist. Whether it exists or not, the perception of the person dealing with it is very real... so it has to be understood from that viewpoint. Good for you for not shunning a friend for being 'different'. Guess we're all different in our own ways. Good article.

I have a dissociative disorder from severe traumatic childhood abuse. I ended up in foster care and in good therapy, and it has paid off. I am embarrassed to admit it, but I want to set an example that it's not so bad to tell the world that you have a condition because of inhumane abuse as a child. It's not my fault. Besides, I have a rich internal life. That's the good thing about having this disorder. Thank you a million buckets for this one! Your are so very good secretsides, very good.

There's a lot of interesting research on MPD. The personalities actually have different physical ailments and sometimes, because of change in facial expressions can look like different people. The mind is a wonderful and mysterious untapped world that we need to explore more in depth.

Thanks for providing insight into this disorder. It's amazing how the mind protects itself. I have a dear friend who has this disorder, and I love her very much. What she went through was horrific, and she's been an inspiration to me. Like you said, people with this aren't stupid or weird. She's very intelligent, creative, and quite normal in every way. Thank God she was given the gift of a way to escape the horror. Excellent job on this, and I gave you five stars!

Great job on a difficult illness. Your friend is lucky to have you. (btw, have you read "When Rabbit Howls" ? -- it's a great book about a woman with something like 17 different personalities, true story, who suffered horrendous abuse as a child. You might like it)

I think it's wonderful that you are so supportive of your friend. Usually, people with this disorder are left to fend for themselves because folks don't know how to handle their personality changes, and are often afraid of them. Thanks for sharing this.
