It has been estimated that 15%-30% of all adults suffer from high blood pressure also known as Hypertension. It goes to say that your diet can cause the problem and greatly reduce it depending on how your diet is. A high blood pressure diet may be something that you should consider as part of your treatment process. The higher the blood pressure, the greater your chance is of developing a heart attack, stroke, and your arteries clogging up.

Going on a high blood pressure diet does not mean that you have to do without a lot of your favorite foods, just learn to cook them differently and use healthier substitutes when possible. A high blood pressure diet can be maintained by excluding foods such as salt, fatty foods, red meat, sugar, sodium, and other foods that possess a potential hazard.

How to cut out fatty foods while on a high blood pressure diet

When going on a high blood pressure diet, it is important to cut out fatty foods along the way. Fatty foods are not good for you and can cause more problems than it is worth. If you are use to eating with food that has been prepared in grease, try boiling it or cooking it in the oven instead. Another favorite of mine is to grill out which causes the fat to drain from the meat. When preparing the meat, trim off all noticeable fat before cooking it, this will limit the fat that is actually consumed.

Using substitutes for added flavor while on a high blood pressure diet

It may make your want to cringe when you first think about going on a high blood pressure diet and having to get rid of a lot of seasonings that contain salt. Substituting salt doesn't have to taste bad. There are plenty of salt substitutes out there and they keep getting closer and closer to the actual flavor. If you are not fond of substitutes but still want the flavor, try cooking with vegetables. When I cook meat, I often add in peppers and onions to add flavor instead of spices for a much healthier meal that everyone can enjoy.

These are great tips, but it's important to note that not everyone is the same. For example, some people (even those with hypertension) are not sodium sensitive, which means cutting sodium won't help. Because my high blood pressure is hereditary my doctor said I could lose weight, exercise until I was blue in the face, and eat a bland diet and still have high blood pressure. My parents were both thin and exercised a lot when they were diagnosed with hypertension in their 20s. They both went on low sodium diets and it didn't help. With heredity, you can change everything and still have it. These are wonderful tips though!! I just wish they worked for me.
