After living in Arizona for the first eighteen years of my life, I followed my family out to Southern California and attended college. I've been here six years now (and I plan to relocate very soon) and I've concluded that it's a much better place to visit than to live. Here's my 10 reasons not to live in Southern California.

1. Traffic/Freeways
Southern California (or, SoCal as they call it) probably has the worst traffic congestion in the country, maybe even the world. With nearly 30 freeways, So Cal does its traffic reports by freeway numbers, not names. You'll hear things like, "Sig alert on the 10 has you backed up all the way down to Sunset Blvd. on the 405, where the 101 is starting to gain momentum again after the crash off the 23...". There are few areas in Southern California where people use side streets to get around. Unless you are running to a gas station, grocery store or coffee shop close to home, chances are you'll be traveling down a freeway, going no more than 40 m.p.h. most of the time. Don't even try to get anywhere fast between the hours of 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Rush hour brings even more congestion on the freeways. The worst part is, many of the accidents that happen are due to people talking on their cell phones or gawking at a pulled over car on the side of the road. If Southern California drivers knew how to pay attention to their own driving, instead of slowing down to see why Joe Schmo's flashers are on, there would be less congestion.

With all due respect...you must be a very insecure person, as it is very obvious from what I read that you don't "fit it" because you don't look like Simpson, grow up. The fact that you believe everybody in SoCal is superficial, inconsiderate and materialistic is absolutely insane, what kind of crowd have you surrounded yourself with? I agree on two things Traffic and Cost of living, it comes with the territory take it or leave it.

people quit talking about cali like its something great, everything in the 10 list i feel is true and it stays true cause californians feed off the stereotype more than anyone else.let cali burn.

I have listened to C&W radio stations out here, but I personally do not like it. Reminds me of a past I would rather forget. The "if he beat her, she deserves it men-tality" prevelant among C&W listeners. Actually Camden, New Jersey was considered the most dangerous city in the US. California was once considered "the People's State" because they ruled the government, the government did not rule them. Now it is the state leading the Nation in anti-smoking legislation. People are no longer free to smoke a cigarette on a beach or some streets in Santa Monica.

There are constant earthquakes in the LA area and a bit of sinking of land due to oil drilling. This is what causes all those potholes. The city of LA has many districts. One does not see many blue-eyed blondes with boob jobs in China town for instance. It is a stereotype for me to say that Mexican-American females in LA do not need to resort to boob jobs. Speaking of Mexican-Americans most are known to be conservatives not liberals. LA people bike, scooter and skate to work to save fuel and uncrowd the streets of vehicles. A very health conscious people they run, jog, swim, participate in sports, cease consumption of red meat.

When I moved to So Cal I could rented an apartment a 1/4 block from the beach for $395. a month. Unthinkable on the Jersey coast. Plus the beaches are free; do not need a car to get around due the excellent public transportation system. There is so much diversity among the people, acceptance, tolerance and love. Hollywood of course creates all kinds of jobs~they even hire homeless off the streets. Traffic is a bit worse then in NYC and Washington DC areas.

I was born and raised in SoCal and do not agree with you. You need to do more research on your subject before you write anything derogatory or positive about it. There are not only good country radio stations out here (and not only subscription radio) but also stations that play classical, children's, and other culture's music. You obviously did not learn anything in "what college did you go to?" about being thorough when you write a report on any subject. All of your other topics were off also. You obviously did not visit any other part of SoCal other than the "hotspots" frequented by the "in" crowd. You did not take the time to get to know the rest of us.

Leena, you have the attitude of a lazy, cynical, judgemental person. I agree with Brain; most of what you say regarding the people of So Cal applies to a small percentage of the people here and if it's so terrible, why are you still here? Has it seriously taken you six years to finish college? There are plenty of inexpensive things to do here, you just have to make an effort to find them (Hollywood Bowl, amazing hiking trails all over, etc). If you pried yourself out of the bars to explore some other forms of entertainment, you might find that not everything here costs an arm and a leg. I also noiced that you travelled quite a distance to go to school in a state with such an awful education system. Oh, and the reason it's expensive to live here is because it is such a wonderful place to live. You know why living in AZ is cheap? Because people don't want to live there!

If enough people like you, who are always welcome to leave, went back to the paradise from whence they came that would eliminate probably 5 or 6 of the reasons listed above. Sounds like you got your opinions more from watching LA-centered TV shows than actually getting to know anyone very well. Maybe you were determined to hate the place before you ever got here, seems like you're pretty closed-minded and it's been everyone else's fault that things didn't work out in your career. Better to go back and be wildly happy in lovely Phoenix than bitter and angry in LA. W

I finally figured out why this struck me as close-minded and overly-cynical. You're a christian with an ever hateful, close-minded, self-righteous and judgmental (and sad) outlook on life. I lived in LA for 4 years and for the most part found my stereotypes not true. But if you go into it with the mindset of yours, of course it will live up to your expectations. I also grew up in the bible-belt as a hardcore christian, so I can understand where you're coming from.

I lived in the LA area (and worked at LAX) and can agree with all your points, and add one more observation..crime..I have traveled all over the world and been to places most Americans would consider to "dangerous" to visit...yet LA is the only place where I have been a crime victim (stolen car, and held up by gunpoint-XMas morning, no less) I don't even consider LA a good place to visit..

You've hit it on the ball, Leena, especially when talking about LA(county). Get this: The Los Angeles area is the least affordable housing market in the nation: only 1.8% of the population can afford what is considered the "average" house. This sucks even if you work for the other "biz" in the South Bay region. There the only way to buy a house is to spend at least ten times the average family income or live in cities like Inglewood (riots), Watts (highest drive-by rate in the nation) and Compton (most dangerous city in the nation).
