Surely everyone is familiar with the terms marijuana, LSD and mushrooms, but Salvia often ceases to ring any bells.

According to www.salvia.net, Salvia Divinorum is a plant that, when consumed, produces a hallucinogenic state that can range from a subtle trip to extreme madness. In comparison to LSD or mushrooms, which can last for over eight hours, Salvia only lasts for about one hour tops, the average trip usually lasting a half hour.

Unlike its counterparts, however, Salvia is legal and can be purchased virtually anywhere online for a cheap price, perhaps accounting for the stir the plant has caused among lawmakers in the US.

According to Jessica Gresko of the Associated Press, one of such lawmakers, Florida's state representative Mary Brandenburg, is actively looking to ban the drug, stating "As soon as we make one drug illegal, kids start looking around for other drugs they can buy legally. This [Salvia] is just the next one."

Brandenburg recently has introduced a bill, suggesting the possession of Salvia and its extracts be punished as a felony, with up to five years in prison. This would make the plant a part of the same controlled substance class as LSD and marijuana. Eight states in the US have already enforced limitations on the plant.

I first heard of Salvia from a college professor whose theory on life was "to try everything at least once." Sharing similar views, I was surprised I never stumbled upon this legal wonder.

After doing some research online and talking to some friends who had tried the substance, I decided to take the plunge.

Although many say taking Salvia outside is a wonderful experience, I decided against it, as being at college I ran the risk of running into an angry campus cop, or simply scaring off a bunch of students.

this is why i have little respect for what is deemed legal or illegal......it is hypocrisy......alcohol is addictive and have caused people to get behind the wheel killing others...yet it is legal!!!!! cigarettes are addictive, causing lung damage but....i won't even go on. make it all legal or all illegal ......in my opinion it should all be legal if it is not addictive.

The one comment is correct.. salvia and marijuana are nothing alike.. I have tried both and will never touch salvia again, though more power to those who enjoy it. Though it is fairly potent to be unregulated, all it is, is a type of sage, so regulation or outlaw might prove a complicated endeavor.

First off, Salvia and Marijuana are nothing alike. I have smoked salvia numerous times, and I am a strong believer that Marijuana should not be illegal due to its medicinal and even emotional benefits. Making salvia illegal is incredibly useless because, unlike Marijuana, Alcohol or Tobacco, Salvia is not habit forming. You do not become addicted to this substance, and if you do, than you probably have a mental addiction instead of an actual dependency on the substance. Making this plant illegal is just another example of how our lawmakers would ban a substance than take the time to actually learn about its compounds and its effects within the human body. For those who want to ban this drug, do your damn research and understand what you're trying to ban.....geez.

actually no, JDMF... i said what my experience was like while trying to be as objective as possible...and said those who havent done any hallucinigens should not try it for the first time. I dont think it should be banned, yet its obviously going to be cause thats just the world we live in. its not dangerous unless you dont take any precautions and dont take the time to research what exactly is being taken into your body. im as free-spirited as they come and i live off experience obviously the only fear monger is you, so go pass judement somewhere else

"There were "trippy" effects, but I have to say for the majority of the time, I felt stuck." Wow, you're right, it sounds extremely dangerous. We should be throwing people in jail for a minimum of five years for having such experiences. In fact, you obviously agree that *you* should have gone to jail for your admittedly quite mild experience. Think about that; you can talk all you want about banning it, but until you agree that your personal experience merits a trip to the pokey, you're just another fear-monger. Sorry to break it to you.l

What most people don't realize, is it is in a lot of people's YARDS. Good article

Cheap? I don't think so. Not for the traditional use by camposinos. Yep, just more racism/class warfare being proposed by the White Man. Next Mexicans are going to step on a white man's shadow because of sage, and white women will rediscover jazz. The upside of prohibition is that its bound to become cheaper. Thats not a bad thing.

I just heard about this on the news and have been reading about it. It seems like it can be very dangerous. I think it ashould be illegal to buy. If you need to have a babysitter, lie still and move weapons doesnt sound like a safe product at all. Great piece about your experience.

Lets ban Alcohol and Tobacco and coffee and sugar. It only makes sense since these do more damage than any other drugs known to man.

+1.

why ban it? in a free society the decision to use a substance belongs to the individual. banning anything assumes that individual rights are unimportant. where is this country going to end up if we continue to decide for others what is right or wrong for them. i say take a gander at the constitution of the united states of america. you might be surprised, it doesn't really talk much about restricting personal behavior. legalize it! (that is all the "its" you can imagine) and choose to, or choose not to.
