STD and Sexual Education for Teenagers

Twenty-five percent of US teen girls have a STD, according to LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer. Sex education is now abstinence only. As a mother of a daughter, an aunt, and a friend this is quite disturbing. What is even more disturbing is the fact that schools are taking sexual education out of their curriculum. We have all been young once and I suggest we think back and try to remember not only what we did, but what the other kids did. Unfortunately, when we are teenagers we know everything and God forbid if our parents tell us something. We would either do it to see if they were right or we would do it because our parents didn't know anything and we'd show them! I was on Yahoo! Answers today and a lot of people (I believe children) are asking sexually based questions. Someone needs to be explaining. If the parents can't or don't the school system should. The school system should be explaining most of it any way especially the names and biological reproduction and fertilization process. We all know it happens but when you sit and think about it other than telling your children this is what could happen so don't do it are we really able to EXPLAIN it to them. If they want to take sexual education out of the school, or not teach this as part of health class, it should at least be covered in biology. I would much rather it be taught in school than finding out from my children other children are telling or showing them "things". I feel confident that I will be able to talk to my kids about this because I am already explaining things to a five year old girl but right now we are talking in five year old terms! This hasn't gotten to the point either of us need to be embarrassed - except for the picture she drew of a female... The point is as a parent I would like some help with this matter because I want her to be informed. She shouldn't be embarrassed to talk about sex as long as she is learning and I think all children have the right to know before they wind up in the doctors office saying I don't know how this happened.
