For hundreds of years there have been those who claim to be able to 'read' the bumps on people's heads, feet and other parts of their anatomy but now we bring you 'thumb reading'. This is simple to learn and fun to play around with, but I would never suggest taking it too seriously.

First of all you need to check for thumb rings as these can give away a multitude of secrets and the wearer is usually completely unaware of it.

A person's thumbs are a good indicator of their attitude towards doing things, and what is going on in their mind. The thumb is a very powerful symbol when it comes to human beings. For example, take the expression, 'Under the thumb'. Whether we like to admit it or not we all seem to find ourselves 'under the thumb' at some stage in our lives. The question is, 'Who's thumb?' (Probably lots of room for heated domestic discussion on this one.')

A significant area of the human brain is involved in controlling the thumbs and as thinking changes, so does the way the thumbs are held. It is said that wearing a thumb ring gives you more power and control of things around you. It is an ancient symbol of power and control and in India around the third century, it was customary to wear your wedding ring on your thumb.

In the 1500's in Britain, wearing a ring on your thumb indicated that you were a doctor, or healer, or that you thought you were one. Women also wore their husband's wedding ring on their thumb when he went off to battle, or died.

Choosing to wear a thumb ring on your left hand indicates strong attitudes, beliefs and instincts. Opting for the right hand shows strong materialistic tendencies, and logical thinking.

The position of thumb itself is said to give clues to a person's personality.

The gap between the thumb and the rest of the fingers changes according to how a person feels about taking charge of things.

E Narrow gaps indicate careful, measured thinking before action.

E Medium sized gaps can signify balance and a willingness to take charge if its needed .

E Wide angles suggest a person who gets enthusiastic and jumps into things and likes to be in charge of how they go.
