Should a Christian Vote for a Pro-Choice Candidate

Christian Vote: Pro Life

I know that many Christians are torn, or maybe resolute, that they will absolutely not vote for a president who is pro-choice. If you've read my Radiant God blog, then you will know my testimony regarding my abortion and how I believe that was the greatest mistake of my life. As a Christian, and someone who doesn't believe in abortion, I have been asked how I could ever vote for a candidate that is pro-choice. Here is my answer to all that wonder how a Christian who doesn't believe in abortion could vote for a pro-choice candidate.

Abortion is legal. Abortion has been legal throughout George Bush's presidency. Yes, there has been great progress with partial birth abortion, but the fact is that women have had abortions since Roe vs. Wade, and before. If I vote for Obama, I am not voting for abortion. Abortion is already legal and babies are dying every day. I do not believe that our government has ever, nor will it ever, force women to have abortions against their will. Yes, I want abortion to be overturned and outlawed. I believe that life begins at conception. I have had an abortion. I have also had eight children. I understand that there is a "falsity" that occurs when a woman has an abortion. Typically, I believe, that a woman is under so much emotional stress due to an unwanted pregnancy, that she will lie to herself and convince herself that what she is doing is morally okay, that it isn't really a baby, and that the baby will be better off if never born. However, none of these beliefs changes the fact that abortions are continuing every day, regardless of whether Bush or Al Gore was in office. If a woman does not want to have an abortion, she doesn't have to have one.

You say if you vote for Obama you're not voting for aborting human life at certain ages -let's say under about 9 months. Yes you are; the President appoints Supreme Court justices. For example, Bush appointed Roberts and Alito who upheld the ban on partial birth murders. Obama will appoint the pro death demonized judges instead. You say outlawing killing, eg aborting, lives of people at certain ages-let's say under about 9 months-wont stop it. Ok, so you are against laws on the books prohibiting murder. How about robbing banks, stealing, wife abuse, in short abusing property or persons of anyone by anyone else. Why prohibit murder of anyone? After all, laws wont stop it; turn on the news and you see murders take place. Why have any commandments; why have any law at all? People wont stop sinning, so stop wasting time trying to prohibit them. Obama recently refused to support a bill that refers to a born baby as a "person." Who cares? Vote for him. He stands with his "gay brothers" also.

I am really torn on this issue- not on the issue of whether or not I am pro life- I am 100% pro life, but on the separation of being pro life and voting for a pro choice candidate. I am really leaning towards Obama (I have no problem sharing my political views) and though I have been back and forth on the issue (as I imagine a lot of Christians are), I don't think I can let my pro life opinions prevent me from voting for Obama. I do not believe he is a Muslim and at this point, I think he is a much better choice than McCain- I am really torn about these issues- but agree that prayer and compassion will override a prochoice president- because as the facts show- abortion has been legal no matter what our president's personal stance and opinion have been on the issue.

I was feeling so proud, until I saw that you repudiated this article. I can't judge what changed your mind/heart on this point. I will only say that I think your initial comments were right on target. Outlawing abortion won't stop the practice, which has been with us for since the first unwanted preganancy and will continue to go on until every pregnancy is, if not planned, at least seen as the blessing it truly is. What will stop abortion is a combination of education (sex and otherwise) and compassion- real compassion, the kind where you pray not only with your mouth, but also your hands, head, and sweat put into the service of others. If you want to stop abortion, the candidate you should pick is the one who best supports these efforts. In my personal experience, I've found that these men and women are often in fact pro-choice precisely because they recognize that, until these changes happen, it's far better for abortion to be "safe, legal and rare," then the opposite seemingl

Just scratch this whole entire article- I was deluded and have completely changed my mind. I won't vote for anyone who isn't completely pro-life and I've repented for writing this. Every baby has the right to live and the only way things will change is by changing the heart- but until then- I think we should change laws. Thank God for revival and bringing me back to my senses!

Wow Audrey, I am really surprised that you agree with me, lol. I actually feel a bit of guilt for actually pubishing my beliefs in a public setting. You know, the hardest part of being a Christian (for me) is being labeled a "rebel" when you don't agree 100% with the powers that be (not Jesus mind you, I'm talking church staff. But I just can't stop thinking for myself, call me rebelious (which many have). But the way I see it, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, and one day, I will see the light and change my views. But I am not going to change my views to make them line up with someone else's simply to avoid being ostracized by fellow Christians. Of course I believe abortion is evil and murder- but there is so much more to deal with- and if the church collectively focused on loving women (of al faiths, backgrounds, etc.) I believe that would be a better solution for abortion; especially better than just screaming about it from the pulpit.

Oh my gosh, I agree totally! My whole thing is that it's a mute point to argue that "abortion is bad". Of course it's bad, it's so sad and awful! But making abortion illegal isn't going to stop the abortions from happening, I think the church focuses on the wrong part of the entire issue. The root issue is that women with nowhere else to turn need to be taken in, helped, and loved!
