Let me preface this by saying that I"ve had some bad luck with steak dinners latety. Over the weekend I had gone to another restaurant where my steak was served up raw. The place immediately apologized and told me we would not be paying for it and brought me a new steak dinner. I was very pleased with their service. I am not mentioning who they were so people won't go there and try to get a free steak dinner. This steak was not just rare, it was downright raw. However, raw is something you can easily spot and not eat. Rancid, on the other hand, if you smothered with steak sauce, you may not notice right off.

Luckily for me, I don't use steak sauce. As soon as I bit into my steak at Village Inn in Gobles, Michigan I knew at once that it was slimy and had a very nasty taste. In fact, the slimy nasty taste had lodged in my throat and nothing could get rid of the taste and feeling of it. I asked my husband to try a piece just in case there was something wrong with my taste buds and he actually spat it out.

Now my husband was very unhappy as he had completely lost his appetite. Having just had the similar experience described earlier a couple of days ago at a different restaurant, we naturally assumed they would make it right. Of course we now had to wait for them to make me a new steak dinner. There was no mention of it being free at all. My husband complained to me that he was not going to pay for it. I told him to wait until it is time to pay and see if they tell us it is comped. I was sure they would. Afterall, they certainly should've.

So, after the waitress brings my new steak dinner out I immediately cut off a piece and taste it to see if it is okay or not. She sees my husband sitting there, not touching his food. She seems unconcerned about it. I told her I think it tastes okay, but admitted it was hard to tell for sure because I still had the taste of the rancid one. She assured me it was a fresh one, stating it had come from a different location than the ones we were previously served, she was certain of it's freshness.

Well, Charlene, the cook sent a rancid steak but the waitress still served us and brought us drink refills so I can't fault her service. I don't think it would be fair to penalize the waitress for the food quality.

I have to tell you that you should NEVER reward bad service. One of the docs I worked with owned a restaurant and my husband and I was given bad service once.. and I told him about it. He said he would take care of it, but told me in the future to leave the wait staff 2 pennies, and that sends the message loud and clear. They know you DIDN'T forget to leave a tip... but that was what we thought they were worth. Great read! Sorry you had such bad service. We don't have a Village Inn here that I know of.

That is inexcusable customer nonservice. They are lucky you didn't call the board of health and have them shut down. There is no excuse for serving rancid food- you are right, the chef should have noticed when preparing it.
