Dalai Lama made a surprise visit to the town of Woodstock, New York yesterday with an inspiring message that lifted the spirits of about 4000 people who came to hear him talk. Starting at 10 am, there was a constant flow of people who made there way toward Andy Lee Field to await his appearance at 3:30 PM. Announced by Jeremy Wilbur, Town Supervisor, this unpublicized meeting drew out almost the entire town. Some businesses closed early to allow employees to attend.

I am not a practicing Buddhist and you don't have to be to get his message.

In his unique animated style, he spoke about the importance of compassion that is so critical in this time for mankind. He was clear to define what he means by true compassion.

He made it clear that although all religions have their own philosophy, the point of the desired outcome is all the same. Each promise inner happiness to their parishioners, be it Judaism, Christianity, Islamic or any other form of religion.

And he implored listeners to understand that in all religions there are "troublemakers," those who stand on the point of difference in their beliefs in order to promote those things that cause destruction in our world. He was very clear to include ALL religions.

When the Dalai Lama speaks, he doesn't necessaiy tell you anything you don't really know if you listen to the human part of your mind. Yet it clearly makes me think about how these simple concepts, if acted on can help to make the world a better place for the future. What is so important is the very reminder of how simple it ccan be to change things. We need to change the way we allow oursleves to determine who leads our country. Self interest runs ramped in our society and it has to stop.

I lived not an hour's drive from Woodstock until a few short months ago; now I'm sorry I left. Hearing the Dalai Lama speak would have been a lifetime highpoint for me.

I've listened to excerpts on the Web and found him very inspiring. I would have loved to have been there.
