What Is This Expedition?
Earthwatch is the host of this cultural exploration expedition. It is intended to help people understand the importance of preserving the heritage and traditions of African peoples. It will be led by historian Clapperton Mavhunga and geneticist Dr. Simon Kang'a. This is not a luxury vacation, you will be roughing it and living with villagers as they live. While this experience is not for everyone, people who are interested in experiencing life from a new perspective, this could be the experience of a lifetime.
When and How Long
This expedition joins an on-going research project, so the dates and durations for this trip are going to vary. For the latest dates, time and costs, you will need to contact Earthwatch directly for more information. However, most of the Earthwatch expeditions last between 11 and 14 days, and cost between $150 and $250 a day. This cost covers your local transportation, meals, lodging, education and supervision.
Where You Will Go
Your expedition will start in Johannesburg, South Africa. This is where you will meet up with your Earthwatch guide. They will then take you to your first village. You will stay in a shared tent and provided with a foam mattress and bedding. You will be roughing it. There will be limited running water, so don't expect a hot shower at the end of each day.
