Eliot Spitzer: The Reason Why Politics is Messed Up

Eliot Spitzer officially announced his resignation during a press conference during Wednesday morning. With his wife by his side, he stated that he wronged his family and the people of New York. Spitzer also announced that his last day would be on Monday, March 17.

The Lieutenant Governor, David A. Paterson, will replace Spitzer and become the first African-American governor of New York, according to MSNBC. Spitzer did not address or answer any questions from the media. The press has been following his every move since the

scandal broke. This has resulted in Spitzer's political career ending in shame and turmoil.

Spitzer used to bed New York's State Attorney. Ironically, he prosecuted crimes such as prostitution rings. He had built a strong and solid political career with his extensive background experience, only to be ruined by his illicit activities. Spitzer won over the New York voters during the election in 2006 by a respectable majority. He appeared to many as a solid candidate for the position of governor. Nonetheless, appearances are deceiving.

Spitzer's lack of judgment to participate in a prostitution ring is evident of Spitzer's inability to remain as governor. He could not have had a respectable or honest career as governor if he did not resign. He had broken the public trust that was instilled by the voters of New York. In addition, nobody would take Spitzer seriously if he decided not to resign. Politically, he made the right move by resigning. His resignation was the only thing he did correctly this past week.

Spitzer did not officially state what he plans to do about his broken political career. However he did state in the press conference that he was committed to restoring the trust his family once had in him. His deceitful and unthinkable actions are too outrageous for Spitzer to attempt to reconcile with New Yorkers.

Many New Yorkers are angry and feel deceived. It will be difficult for New York to overcome this shocking scandal.
