I'm playing golf with Jack Nicklaus today I thought, as I eased the golf cart toward the first tee at Eaglecrest Golf Course set in the beautiful San Pasqual Valley, San Diego. Listening to my new golfing partner extol his ability, had me believing I was in the presence of greatness.

By the time we had completed the day's round in sunny San Diego, I realized I had in fact been playing with Jack Lemmon!
But who cares? I was enjoying a beautiful day on a gorgeous Californian golf course.

Planning a golf trip to San Diego? The only problem you will face is where to play. You are absolutely spoiled for choice with a range of courses to suit all pockets, from the squanderer to the cheapskate.

The area boasts a plethora of golf courses that will appeal to golfers of all levels. Yes, whether you're a Jack Nicklaus or a Jack Lemmon, San Diego will leave you drooling. I was amazed to learn that there are more than 90 golf courses in the area.

San Diego, in terms of golf, has become synonymous with Torrey Pines and La Costa Golf Resort. No I didn't play them! Don't ask.
What a treat though to visit the stunning Salt Creek Golf Club in Chula Vista.
Now here's a golf course that will test your mettle. Almost 6,900 yards from the black tees, more than 70 bunkers, acres of wetlands and some cool breezes thrown in for good measure. Nervous yet?

With your knees still knocking, move on to Carlton Oaks in Santee, with it's 7,200 yard layout from the tips. This is the very place where Phil Mickleson played as he sharpened his game on the way to the top of the professional tree. And no, the green fees do not include a round with Phil.
Does the sound of creeks, pot bunkers, 400 trees and water hazards get your juices flowing? Well, Carlton Oaks must be on your list.

For another wonderful golfing experience, make sure to visit The Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook. If it's good enough for Golf Digest, it's good enough for me.
