Introducing classical music to children should be mandatory. What a wonderful world you will open up to them by introducing them to some of the "stars" from past centuries, people like Mozart, Dvorak, Brahms and Beethoven.Children and youths will always listen to their own choice of popular music, but this doesn't mean we can't add another strand to their musical pleasure.
Because classical music is generally considered "old people's music", it can be a challenge to introduce the classics in a way that will appeal to the younger generation.
My first taste of classical music was in a Bugs Bunny cartoon which opened up to me, the music from the Rossini opera, The Barber of Seville. An unusual introduction yes, but the kind of vehicle that appealed to a childish mind and brought classical music into my world for the first time.
The challenge for parents who see the value of this beautiful music, is to introduce it in a way that will appeal to their children.
Choosing the right kind of CDs will go a long way to achieving your aim to present classical music as something enjoyable, not to mention educational.
When selecting CDs at the local music store, make sure to take your children with you. Try to find a good compilation CD or two that includes selected pieces from well known classical compositions.
If you have knowledge of classical music to some extent, try to find the pieces you are familiar with and that have become popular through use in movies, TV ads and the like.
Allowing your children to actually select the CDs personally, under your direction of course, will make it more likely that they will listen to them.
Encourage your children to listen to their new CD when doing homework, or even to try listening to the softer pieces as they drift off to sleep.
Classical music is for everyone, including children. Finding the right channel to introduce your children to the delights of the classics can be a challenge, but you can be sure the effort will be well worth it.
