NBA Basketball: Western Conference's Southwest Division Season Preview

What Happened Over the Offseason and What Southwest Division Teams Made the Best Improvements for the 2006-2007 Season?

For the most part, the NBA's Southwest Division in the Western Conference came out very successful this summer in preparation of the 2006-2007 season. Let's take a look at what teams succeeded in becoming better over the offseason.

5. Memphis Grizzlies
The Memphis Grizzlies had the worst offseason for essentially one reason. Their most important member, Pau Gasol, had a foot injury over the summer and is not expected to be back into a Grizzlies uniform until December. That's almost the worst news any Memphis fan could hear, as the Grizzlies might miss the playoffs with him missing in action for approximately two months. Even when he returns, it's possible that he won't be playing at the same caliber he did last season. The acquirement of rookie Rudy Gay is a nice gain, but he isn't expected to make a sudden impact with the team.

4. San Antonio Spurs
Over the offseason the Spurs lost Rasho Nesterovic and Nazr Mohammed. They were quickly replaced with two other big guys who are younger: Francisco Elson and Jackie Butler. Since they're young and athletic guys, it's quite possible they can become pretty good centers in the league with the aid of Tim Duncan. With Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Duncan still under contracts, the Spurs hope to see the two new teammates make a big difference in the upcoming years.

3. Houston Rockets
With Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming healing from various injuries, the Rockets are in pretty good shape for missing their two best players. The Rockets acquired Shane Battier through a trade with the Grizzlies and it could likely be in their favor. With the additions of good outside shooting from Steve Novak and the energetic and quick Vassilis Spanoulis. If McGrady and Yao continue to get better, the Rockets can become a very dangerous team.
