It is always difficult to make the decision to place a loved one in an assisted living facility. The Senior citizens homes community as a whole have often received undeserved bad reputations for inadequate care and sub standard living conditions. While there have been abuses in the past, the age of the neglected grandmother left in a corner all day is virtually non existent except for a few anomalous cases. Today's facilities are bright, clean, and employ caring staff who work hard to make seniors as comfortable as they would be in their own homes.

When I had to decide that it was time to put my grandmother in a senior citizens home I was devastated. It meant leaving behind the home she had lived in all of her life, her gardens, the birds she fed, her pets, and the neighbors she said "Hi" to every morning.

I wish I would have had the choices then that I have now. In Abilene Texas there are several good facilities available depending on the care level required by a senior citizen. The most popular organized care facility is the Sear Methodist Retirement Community System. Sears Methodist has three facilities in Abilene Texas as well as seven other facilities in five major towns nearby. They offer assistance to senior citizens starting from early in-home care all the way to hospice care.

The three facilities they operate in Abilene Texas are:

1) Wesley Court - They feature "Executive" homes, apartments, and an assisted living and health care services center. Taken from the Wesley Court website at the facility is described as "A private residential neighborhood setting, Wesley Court is nestled on 50 acres and offers a full continuum of retirement services - the first of its kind in Abilene and the surrounding area. Executive Homes, Apartments, Assisted Living and Health Care Services grace this beautiful gated community. A lake and walking paths enhance grounds." An interactive virtual tour is available online.
