First the explanation. This article was inspired by an AC call for content by those who have experience helping prostitutes make the transition to legal employment. Although I have experience helping young women find legitimate odd jobs, I never asked whether any of them had been prostitutes, so I don't know whether I've had this experience or not. So, this article is addressed to young women who may be wondering what other alternatives they have in today's shrinking job market.

This audience definitely does not include most of the people who've posted comments and sent me messages indicating that they've read my other AC articles. Well, in every business, including writing, we must eventually expand our outreach. If you're solvent, mature, and/or male, feel free to pass on these Top Ten Alternative Ways to Raise Cash to anyone who seems to need them.

1. If your financial desperation has anything to do with addictions to drugs, alcohol, or gambling, here's another reason to get help: Your support group could be a good source of revenue. Although recovery may be easier if you don't have cash in your pocket, church and community groups are sometimes willing to pay the rent, help you find a better place to live, buy you groceries, watch your kids, or even help out with college tuition. Depending on your community's needs, they might also offer opportunities for you to tell people about the recovery experience. If you have a talent for public speaking or singing and are willing to commit yourself to a religious or humanitarian approach, this could be your big break.

Takeaways
  • Legitimate odd jobs may not pay as much as prostitution, but they're safer.
  • Legitimate odd jobs can become prestigious and lucrative.
  • Almost any skill, hobby, or talent can be turned into a legitimate odd job.

Some cities even have nonprofit organizations, like HIPS, whose goals include recruiting ex-prostitutes to help other young women escape the profession.

This is a very informative article. I have never been able to understand how some people get into prostitution, but it does seem that life experiences as well as addictions can play a role. Sophie
