Interesting history of pi. You should check out the Pi Day site (http://www.PiDayInternational.org) which has an illustrated history of Pi, and elaborates on some of the things you've listed - with pictures of pi and the people. Also, spent part of Pi Day at the Pi Day site http://mathematicianspictures.com/PI/PI-DAY.htm where the giant Pi drops every pi day - sort of like the New Years ball drop in Times Square!
