What if Geraldine Ferraro is right? Her comments were viewed by people across the planet as racist, but is she accurate?

For most of the Democratic campaign, I have been told that as a white woman, I should be supporting Hillary because she represents a change from the old boy network of American politics. Her own pollsters have said Republican women will cross party lines and vote for her because she's a woman.

On the other hand, I've been told that Barack Obama is the candidate for change. Officially, that means a change in the way we do things, a change in our approach to foreign affairs and a change in old world politics. Unofficially, it means a step away for the old white boy network of American politics.

Personally, I support Obama because he is my Senator, because long before he was a presidential candidate, I heard him speak and I liked the message he was sending then. I like that he can talk about compromise and Christian values at the same time without me getting the dipped in slime feeling I get from the Clintons.

But what if Geraldine Ferraro is right? Would I have been as willing to support a white man saying the same things? Would you?

Like it or not, there is a uniqueness factor at play in the Democratic race this year. If he were able to talk candidly without fear for whatever is left of his political career, John Edwards might acknowledge it. His message was not exceedingly different from Obama's, but he was not the media darling that Barack became. He was an old white boy lawyer preaching change. It was too much like the lies we had heard before.

I personally didn't like Edwards because I distrust trial lawyers in general and some of his supporters gave me pause as well. However, the real reason that Edwards finished third in the race was clearly that his candidacy lacked the uniqueness of Hillary and Barack.

Your 3rd from last paragraph was correct. That was exactly what Ferraro was saying - the thing that most makes him stand out is his color, and but for that he is indistinguishable from any other run of the mill Lib. Jeff is wrong about Obama and the news of the last few days only confirms what i have been arguing for a week now - Obama is a politician just like the rest. He's no worse; he's no better. But the only CHANGE is his color. As long as one accepts that reality, if he trips your trigger vote for him, but know you are voting for the most liberal member of the Senate, and with him will come all the liberal baggage of socialism, hating America and all the rest of the non-stop assault they level against us, the US.

Ferraro wasn't right....and yes, race, gender, age, etc..are all things people think about. Obama got where he is because he is Obama, and he is change.
