Yes, introducing any new pet to an animal you have owned for some time can be a trying experience for everyone.
The older the animal ,the more threatened, or rejected and jealous they can be.
The new animal can feel frightened.
And you my feel a little guilty.
But the adjustment shouldn't take more then two weeks and before you know it, the animals will be playing together like old pals.
And I have found it easier to introduce a kitten or a puppy to your present (either a cat or dog) then and older animal to your house hold.
When you bring the new arrival home, take it too the bathroom,after 15 minutes or so, open door,stop back and just watch.
There is almost sure to be hissing and spitting,growls and even a few swipes of the paws.
But stay out of it....
Do not reprimand or punish you older pet. Because this is a difficult time for it, so you want to reassure the animal that there has been no change in your affection for it, make it clear that you haven't gotten the new cat or dog as a replacement.
Remember,your older cat or dog is used to being king or queen of the house, and believe me your doesn't want to give up this position. Don't forget to lavish some attention on the first pet. It will adjust much quicker to having a new animal around.
But There is one circumstance in which it is wiser not to get a second animal, If your present pet has always been and only pet,and over 10 years old. Think twice about disrupting its life at this point.
Older animals tend to be set in their ways. They have far more trouble adjusting to the fact there a new coming in the house.Older cats will have more difficulty defending their "rights" and their "territory" against a younger and vigorous cat or dog.
In general,most cats and dogs, like having a pal to play with. Because people are out of the house all day ,for work and school.
They will keep each other healthier by exercising and playing with each other......Yes I have done all of this myself :}

Great information. I have been there/ done that; yeah, kitty gets mad when a new kitten invades his/her turf, but they eventually get over it when they realize they don't have a vote on the issue!

Your kitty is cute...I would give Mr. Lucky a playmate, but I just don't have the room or finances to support another animal...good article.
