I'm going to say this right off the top: Bill O'Reilly hates America. I'm not saying this with a hint of irony, nor am I talking about the over-the-top flag-waving, Toby Keith-sing-a-long America. I'm talking about the real America, the one of ideas, freedom, and democracy. I'm talking about the one founded on Enlightenment principles by a group of renegade intellectuals. I'm talking about the Abraham Lincoln America, not the Joe McCarthy America, the one founded on reasoned democratic debate and not the one fueled by Orwellian-like bile.

So I say this: Bill O'Reilly hates the real America. His financial and personal motives covered with superficial jingoism, he has set out to create a new America with new core values and - potentially - a whole new history. I know quite well that others have been "spinning" America's core values for two decades - the Rush Limbaughs of the world - but they have generally been marginalized by the levelheaded among us (remember Limbaugh's infamous stint on ESPN?), relegated to an audience who likes buying into that particular myth about America.

But last night, something horrendous happened. I was idly flipping channels, and there he was: Mr. O'Really, on ABC, talking to Barbara Walters in some sort of exclusive interview. Primetime network television? For this loon? Apparently so, and worse than his appearance was the content of what he was said in the mere two minutes before I changed the channel. O'Reilly, looking confidant, angry, and smug, told Barbara that so-called "SPs," or "secular progressives," are ruining America. He claimed that these so-called "SPs" run the media and that is why "nontraditional" outlets have brought issues like abortion and prayer in schools to the center stage, even though those two issues have been in the mainstream media for roughly thirty and forty years, respectively. He placed the number of “SPs” around 20% and basically suggested that they should be defeated or purged in the style of Uncle Joe.

Bull flippin' bleep.

Takeaways
  • Bill O'Reilly spread propoganda.
  • Historically, the USA is a secular progressive one.
  • People should study history more to stop things like this.
Did You Know?
A 2004 Political Science article found that O'Reilly's program actually turned people off from politics.
Resources
  • All poll data was taken from Gallup Brain: www.institution.gallup.com There are an amazing array of books out there that show secular progression to be the historical force in American culture. ; For further reading, contact the author.

Stephanie - I love the phrase "AC Right Wing Gestapo." I just looked at Greg Reeson's latest crap and he's got like a 4.7!!! And a completely baseless anti-gay rant is rated higher! And yet not *ONE* of them has left a comment critical of the actual content of the article.

Ah, Billo! Just using the phrase "no spin zone" is such a spin itself..what is truly amazing is that there are so many who follow every word he says, although his numbers are falling...Kieth Olbermann seems to have Billo in the crosshairs, and comes out ahead in their battle...

My parents are, unfortunately, fans. They think he always tells the truth. That he sounds reasonable and not like the frothing meglomaniac that he really is. Very unfortunate. And I'm sorry the AC Right Wing Article Gestapo is downrating your article. We seriously need to recruit some diversity to this place.

Engel - I've never read "Lies and the Lying Liars." It's possible, though, since it's a simple sentence and it's obvious. What I love is that the articles "rating" has plumeted from 4.7 to 2.0 overnight, but no one seems to be leaving negative comments. Interesting...almost like they want to supress the truth about the world.

This article is very welcome to those of us who cringe whenever "no spin" is mentioned. My major issue with those of O'Reilly's followers (and those of his compatriots, Neil and Ann) is that they are so damn certain. I am a liberal socially and economically and, otherwise, closer to a Libertarian. One of the curses of being a liberal is that we see two sides to the same side! I find it almost impossible to dismiss others' views without some doubt. For better or worse, Mr. O permits me do do just that.

Excellent article!! Seriously well reasoned. I especially like the section about the founding thinkers. Even the Christians among the founders believed in a secular government as they realized, among other things, that mingling in governmnet would corrupt and undermine the church. What is sad is that so many have bought into the O'Reilly-Limbaugh-Hannitized depiction of America, but I feel the tide turning as we speak.

glad to see some up-to-date bullshit off the o'reilly. Although I swear the first line of this essay was from Lies and the lying liars that tell them. written by Al Franken. First he thought that liberals ran everything in media and now he thinks. Progressives do. Maybe because of progressive radio. Who knows?
