It you are wanting to try cast iron cooking for yourself or just want to add pieces to the collection of cast iron cookware that you already have you may have thought about finding used pieces. There is nothing wrong with buying used cast iron cookware, it is a type of cookware that can go on to last for generations. There is however some things to keep in mind when you are shopping for used cast iron pieces.People tend to buy cast iron cookware used for two reasons, one that is all they can find locally and two they want to save money. If you are shopping online and looking at cast iron cookware on a site like eBay you may be surprised at how little you would be saving buying used, or possibly how much you would be spending extra buying used. With a quick glance I discovered an item that was almost 5 dollars more after shipping cost than if you bought it from the retailer. If you are buying used online it is important to compare it to what it would cost new, you could save yourself money.
When you are looking at used cast iron cookware there are some things to look for and to consider before you make a purchase. Being able to see the piece will make it extremely easy to tell if it will be worth your time to restore. You can't really restore any pieces that have cracks, pits or chips in them and avoid pieces that are warped. These pieces would not be safe to cook in. Another important thing to think about is how much you will have to put into restoring the used pieces, in terms of both time and money. If you will have to take sand paper to your used cast iron pieces just to get them in a condition where you can season them you might consider this when see their price. Generally if someone is selling such a piece then they usually have no use for it and just want to get it off their hands and will sell it cheaply to get rid of it quickly.
