I love to hold my son and when he was an infant I could wear him in a carrier while I was working on my computer at times. This worked nicely when I had some things I needed to finish up on my computer and when my son wanted to be held. I quickly learned to type one handed while nursing him and working on my computer too. As a toddler there were definitely some added challenges but I have found some ways to still hold my son while I am sitting at my computer and get work done safely.

The first piece of advice that I have for someone with an infant is to get a sling and not a carrier. Baby carriers are nice but you can't nurse your baby in them where as a sling you can, and you are hands free then. Nursing can be an excellent thing to do while on your computer because you would have to be sitting down to do it anyway. While nursing, as an infant and now as a toddler, my son is supported with one hand and I use my mouse and type with the other hand. It is very important to hold your baby or toddler who isn't in a sling or carrier with one hand at all times, regardless if you are nursing or not. Sudden movement could send your child tumbling out of your lap.

As added safety it can really help if you are using a chair that has arms. This way you will be able to still hold your baby or toddler while you are sitting at your computer but you will also be able to rest your arm a bit. This will be more comfortable for you and your child. Having the chair slightly further back from your desk will also help with added safety. This will also help you because little hands will not be able to reach the keyboard or mouse. If it seems like your little one just can't stop trying to get to your computer sometimes the solution is to take a break from sitting at it.

Working and watching my son at the same time doesn't bother me in the least, as I work at home so I can be with him. At times it can be a bit frustrating if he wants me to hold him for a very long time while I am working as typing one handed certainly takes me longer, but it is all worth being able to work at home.
