When Senator John McCain went to New Hampshire Wednesday, March 12, to hold a town hall meeting, he announced that he had begun searching for someone to round out the Republican ticket in their bid for the presidency in the fall. He told his listeners that he wanted to find someone who agreed with him on the issues and could take his place.

McCain is 71 and will be the oldest man ever elected to the presidency (if elected). He knows his age is of concern to his supporters as well as his detractors. He also knows that among his detractors are those who do not believe he is conservative enough to get their vote. This leads analysts to believe that a little compromise may be in order for Senator McCain to choose his vice president -- a compromise where his partner may agree on some issues and on others be just a bit more conservative than the senator.

For Senator John McCain cannot afford to lose any votes in the upcoming election, especially with the Democrats coming out in record-breaking numbers in the primaries -- all of them.

So who to choose? Senator McCain has quite a few fellow Republicans to choose from, many of whom are quite capable to handle the task. There's former governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee, an extremely likeable and knowledgeable man. There's South Carolina governor Mark Sanford and Florida governor Charlie Crist. Then there's North Carolina senator Richard Burr, South Carolina governor Mark Sanford and newly elected Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal. There's a few more senators, governors, and Congressmen that could possibly make the cut, including McCain's good friend, Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman (but that is very unlikely, because Lieberman is a Democrat). And then there is former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

Romney spoke on Fox News' "Hannity & Colmes" the day before McCain's announcement and said that anyone considered for the vice presidential position would be honored, himself included. When pressed by reporters if Romney would be his choice, McCain had no comment.

I stopped liking Huckabee when he belittled Romney's church... Romney is a class act always above the fray of politics and shows great character in his public and personal life. McCain would be very wise to choose Mitt to be his running mate.....

If McCain were an adult he would choose Mitt Romney. But McCain has demonstraited adolecents in the past with his poor impulse control, poor judgement, and with his lack of future orientation. One good thing though, If he does become senial at least he will retain a portion of his memory: HE NEVER FORGETS A GRUDGE: Another sign of poor judgement and poor future orientation.

Mitt Romney is the man America needs in government. He is a good person with high moral standards and family values. He will support McCain as president and contribute positively to his presidency and to our country. McCain would be a wise man to choose Mitt as his vice-presidential candidate.

I believe Romney is very bright and would help bring many states to a McCain Romney victory. I think McCain would gain almost sweeping support by inviting Romney onboard, while Romney would bring tremendous loyalty in just about every state.

Romney adds the most when you consider that he is very popular in the swing state of Michigan. Obama is looking weak there after not wholeheartedly supporting a primary revote. No other VP choice puts Michigan in play.

The only way that I would vote for Mccain is if Romney were his running mate. Otherwise I'm going with Obama. Mccain may not like Romney, but a huge portion of republicans don't like Mccain. Running with Romney is the only way he could actually win. Our economy needs help!!!

Romney for VP! I still have issues about voting for McCain, but Romney could help me swallow that bitter medicine. I will not be voting McCain otherwise. My biggest issue is McCain's lack of loyalty to his family. (When he came back from being a POW. Ask Ross Perot what happened.) Romney at least gives me hope and an example for my kids. To whoever said Romney is the devil, you are a crude lump of coal that wouldn't know a diamond if you saw one. Both Romney and Romney's religion deserve great respect. "You shall know them by their fruits," Jesus said, and I know of no Presidential candidate who has accomplished more than Romney, and no church that produces more people of good character. No one is perfect, and if they were, they probably wouldn't want to throw stones anyway.

Brock: That's a pretty good analysis. I'm still having trouble seeing McCain bend and allow Romney on his ticket, but, if I were him, I'd be crunching numbers and conducting polls to see what people are thinking. Romney might be his safest and best bet to get into the White House...

Tony: I don't know if 'we' need Romney, but I can understand how the Republicans just might. I'm actually beginning to think that McCain may go searching afield, pull in Crist or someone else.

Jack Bauer: not being tolerant of Mormonism does not make one a racist. Perhaps religiously intolerant, but not racist.

sam: I was speaking on a national level. He was far ahead of Huckabee nationally and wasn't doing all that badly in the south. Look at the Georgia vote, where Huckabee won (34%), McCain came in second (32%), and Romney third (30%). The places were the same in Tennessee and the percentages were 34, 32, 24, respectively. Even though Romney dropped out, Huckabee, when he finally gave up, only finished with 12 more delegates -- and it was just he and McCain and Ron Paul running. So, I'll stand by what I wrote...
