Don't tell me you've visited the metropolis of San Francisco on numerous occasions, but never ventured across the Oakland Bay Bridge to the man-made island paradise of Alameda?

Don't worry, you wouldn't be the only one. The city originated around the same time California became a state. But, it wasn't until after 1900, that - due to some tidal changes - it actually became an island and also an important shipping port. A little more than 74,000 people live on this 12-square mile patch of land. So, what do they do for fun?

Here's my list:

1.Take a bike-tour, walk or drive to view this city's grand Victorian homes. In a neighborhood just off (none other than) Grand Street, you can visit the Gold Coast and its stately 1800-style picturesque painted ladies.
2.Take a bike-ride period. Afterall, it is an island, and a flat one at that!
3.Stroll along Park Street where you can shop at any variety of boutiques. Buy comfortable shoes at Scott's; browse for Asian-style bedding at Matsu Home Furnishings; or, giggle at the kitch items at Happy Trails.
4.Peer into the window next to the Historic Alameda Theater to see a model of what is in store for this relic's renovation.
5.Eat:
a.Breakfast at Ole's Waffle Shoppe or Jim's Coffee Shop
b.Pastries or sandwiches at Boniere Bakery
c.Ice Cream at Tucker's
6.Enjoy the best coffee at Peet's or try local brew at Julie's.
7.Find bargains at Lauren's Closet (toys and more toys - new and lovingly used)
8.Walk along the revitalized Webster Street. Here you will find more chain fast food places.
9.Take in a movie at the cozy Central Cinema - an experience to be remembered.
10.Fly a kite at Robert Crown Memorial Beach.
11.Windsurf along the shore.
12.Take your dog for a run in the enclosed dog park by the beach.
13.Play tennis, basketball, soccer, baseball and more at Washington Park.
14.Pretend you are an Alamedan and shop at the renovated Alameda Towne Centre (formerly Southshore Mall). You will find an enormous Safeway, Walgreen's, Trader Joe's, Mervyn's, Office Max and more.

Alameda is a diverse community. Once home to the Navy, its residents reflect all walks of American life.

"Adam", you're right. There are so many unique qualities to this little town, it's hard to list just a few. In fact, as we speak, more one-of-a-kind boutiques, watering holes and restaurants are in the works!

As a former Alamedan, I enjoyed the article! One note: It wasn't tidal changes that made it an island, it was dredged to allow access to larger ships for shipping. Also, you didn't mention exploring Alameda Point, visiting Rosenblum Winery, or the tiki bar on Lincoln Avenue. Or the New Zealander!

Alameda really is a great place. Go try the dim sum at East Ocean Restaurant on Webster. It's a little more pricey, but it's bang for your buck.
