There is an expression on the face of a newborn,That will never be again.
I have marveled at their beauty,
In awe of their ken.
They have been here so recently,
Sent from heaven and then,
Brought forth to the earth
To start life again.
What is it I ask myself,
That expression on his face?
Self-esteem and wisdom,
Innocence and grace.
There is something about the knowing,
That they will lose within days,
Depending on their needs being met,
And the love that they will face.
If a baby is nurtured,
Their needs are taken care of,
They will keep that self-esteem,
They won't lose that self-love.
They may lose the knowing,
The memory of heaven's past,
The blessed baby will keep on growing,
From his first day till his last.
So love them oh so gently,
Nurture and hold them close.
You cannot spoil a baby,
As a loving mother knows.
The day will come too quickly,
When they let go of your hand,
Exploring fingers sticky,
Freedom their demand.
I watch my son grow in strength and grace,
His growth tugs at my heart,
I remember his infant face,
I begin to guard my heart.
Oh dear God please protect him,
Guard and direct him,
I turn him over to you.
He is now a man.
