If you want your cat to use her litter box, don't offer her whatever cat litter is on sale. Cats are as picky about their cat litter as humans are about their toilet paper.

Let your cat choose from a litter buffet. Buy several different types and brands of cat litter, making sure one of the cat litters is the clumping kind as that seems to be the type most cats prefer. Put about two inches of each brand of cat litter into separate boxes and then let your cat exercise her freedom of choice. While this may sound expensive, time consuming or unnecessary, it will save you money and time in the long run. If your cat is not happy with her cat litter, then she will find her own spot somewhere in your home to relieve herself.

Just as humans are picky about the texture and fragrance of their toilet tissue, your cat is picky about the texture and fragrance of her cat litter.

Once your cat has made her decision about her preferred brand of cat litter, don't throw out the leftover cat litter from her rejected brands. You can donate the rejected brands to an animal shelter, or use the rejected cat litter in the winter on your snow covered driveway for traction. Just sprinkle the cat litter on top of the snow or ice and it will help your tires get traction and keep your car from sliding.

The extra cat litter boxes are always useful for some other project after they have been disinfected. You can bleach plastic litter boxes and use them for holding garden tools or fill them with potting soil and start bedding plants in them, remember to poke holes in the litter box first for soil drainage. Your cat will most likely never use a litter box that has been bleached. Cats seem to have an aversion to slightest of bleach smells and will reject a litter box that has been bleached.

The number one complaint about cat behavioral problems is the cat not using their litter box. While there is certain physical ailments such as FLUTD that causes a cat not use the litter box, quite often it is just the simple matter of the cat not liking the litter in her box.

When it comes to litter choices, you will be happier when your cat is happiest, so let your cat make her own litter choice.
