Recent info on Patrick Swayze's battle with pancreatic cancer indicate that he is on a special high fat diet. You can see that info here as well as many other sources online and off: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23598422/ Having known others with pancreatic cancer, the information about high fat diets was new. in fact, I'd always heard that a high fat diet put one at increased risk for cancer and this link has info that supports that assumption: www.hmc.psu.edu/healthinfo/pq/pancreaticcancer.htm

This site is linked to Penn State's Cancer Institute.

Even though there is evidence that a high fat diet may raise the risk of pancreatic cancer, it seems that when it comes to pancreas cancer treatment options, there are times when extra fat makes sense. it may even help in the fight to battle this deadly cancer. One of the first symptoms of pancreatic cancer can be weight loss. A high-fat diet can combat that and possibly keep someone from getting too frail or underweight during chemotherapy.

But using a high fat diet as part of a treatment plan for pancreatic cancer may be a controversial choice, however. Take a look at this site on cancer treatment at Cancer Research UK: www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp Check out the section on Diet and Pancreatic Cancer. According to the information here, people with pancreatic cancer may find it hard to digest fat.

Still, because fats contain more calories, ounce for ounce, than carbohydrates and protein, they can be used to offset weight loss and maximize weight gain.
Many people, those without cancer, struggle to lose weight. But pancreatic cancer is an aggressive and often deadly disease with weight loss as a part of the picture - all too often.

It isn't a time to worry about health risks from fat but to focus on the best course of treatment for an individual patient like Patrick Swayze. Still, it can be a tricky balancing act and a friend who had pancreatic cancer had serious side effects from a high fat diet, including loose bowels and dehydration.

Second part - which could not fit - see below By getting the body to burn fat rather than sugar for energy the body goes into ketosis - and produces ketone bodies - which seem to repair or feed brain and vital tissue - but will cut of the normal food supply to a tumor. The high fat diet is also being used to treat epilepsy, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. New York Times - High Fat epilepsy treatment for children article "Though its exact mechanism is uncertain, the diet appears to work by throwing the body into ketosis, forcing it to burn fat rather than sugar for energy. Breakfast on the diet might consist of bacon, eggs with cheese, and a cup of heavy cream diluted with water; some children drink oil to obtain the fats that they need. Every gram of food is weighed, and carbohydrates are almost entirely restricted. Breaking the diet with so much as a few cookies can cause seizures to flare up." http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/06/health/research/06epil.html?ref=scie

Here some new information of how fat is now being used to heal the body - I will take a good shot at it. Forget about weight and calories and fat being bad or fattening - this new thinking is more on the lines of Atkins - a thought that would make cereal lovers cringe. But these diets go even further than the Atkins. In short the high fat medical diet - where 80% or more of the days food intake is made up of fats - maybe 15% protein and carbs the rest - produces Ketone bodies - or partially broken down fatty acids - the same things that are produced during a fast . These ketones are capable of feeding normal body tissue - such as brain tissue (as this treatment has been used to control the growth of inoperable brain tumors in children), but provide no food for the tumor or cancerous growth - so they starve the tumor. By getting the body to burn fat rather than sugar for energy the body goes into ketosis - and produces ketone bodies - which seem to repair or feed brain an

Eclectic and others - I just want to be clear that I am not suggesting that a high fat diet is right for every patient. This article is only a suggestion that people do their research. For SOME patients, a high fat diet may be the way to go - for others, it may not. Balancing fats and cancer treatment is not a "one size fits all" situation. It is a tricky thing, from what I've read. However, media reports indicate that Swayze is using a high fat diet, at this time, as part of a treatment plan.
