The Little River Canyon National Preserve is a natural jewel that is protected by the National Parks Service. The area of the Little River Canyon contains waterfalls, swimming pools and some of the most breathtaking scenic views that can be found in the Southern Appalachians. A trip to the Little River Canyon National Preserve is an experience that should not be missed, particularly for those who have an appreciation for the natural beauty that Mother Nature provides.

As the name implies, the Little River is the central icon of the Little River Canyon National Preserve. What makes the Little River unique and sets it apart from other scenic destinations in the National Parks Service is that nearly the entire length of the river is contained on top of Lookout Mountain in Northeastern Alabama. As you can imagine, this creates some incredible views, with vast panoramic lookouts rolling gently behind a beautiful river in the foreground.

One of the most popular areas of the Little River Canyon National Preserve is the aptly named, Little River Falls. The falls area is the starting point, where the Little River begins it's descent into the canyon below. The Little River Falls are 45 feet tall with a woodland backdrop. There is no charge to visit the Little River Falls, which includes picnic tables and other amenities. A short trail leads to an observation area that overlooks the falls.

The "Backcountry" area of the Little River Canyon Preserve is probably the most active section. Primitive camping and horseback riding can be found here, and hunting is allows on designated days/times/areas. There is also an abundance of hiking and ATV trails. Anyone wishing to ride an ATV on the trails will need to pick up a permit at the Park Superintendent's Office. The permit is free, but must be signed for in person by each person who will be riding.

Perhaps the most popular area among locals is the Canyon Mouth area of the Little River Canyon. The Canyon Mouth is a secluded area that provides safe and scenic swimming in the Little River. There is a charge of $3 per vehicle to use the Canyon Mouth, or a season pass can be purchased for $10.
