The Xbox 360 audio connection that you should use depends on the sound system that you connect to your Xbox 360 console:
Digital audio (recommended for best game play experience)
Requires Toslink cable and sound system (both sold separately)
Analog audio (your TV's audio output)

Unplug Xbox from outlet before servicing, use the power supply that came with your Xbox 360, do not use alternative power supplies (invertors or generators), and do not overwork your outlet with numerous extension cords and power strips

Setting up Sound using Digital Audio

Applicable if you have Toslink optical digital audio input (sold separately; If your do not have a Toslink sound system refer to the analog audio setup)

Required Materials before Setup

Xbox 360 system with all cords, TV with audio and video inputs, Xbox 360 manual,
A sound system with a Toslink digital audio input (sold separately), A Toslink audio cable (known locations are Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City), and a Sound System Receiver

Step-by-Step Procedures

Turn off Xbox if it is turned on, unplug Xbox 360 console,connect the Xbox video plug which came with the console into the Xbox 360 (either the single yellow cord or the red, blue, and green cords). If video cords are already plugged in unplug the red and white audio cords.There is a Toslink jack connected at the back of the Xbox 360, connect one end of the Toslink cable to the Xbox 360 console and the other end to the audio input on your sound system receiver, plug your Xbox 360 console back into outlet. Turn on your Xbox 360 then switch your receiver to the digital audio source.

Now you will be able to enjoy the experience of high quality digital audio from your Xbox 360 console.
