How to Make Halloween Costume Gloves

Many Halloween costumes look better with black gloves as part of the accessories. There are several different glove designs you can easily make yourself. Using nylon stockings is a great way to make the gloves, and you’ll have a different
design each time when you use different stockings, like fishnet, lacy types, or just plain black.

The design of the stockings you use is all-important for making the Halloween gloves. Pantyhose types aren’t suitable for this project. Use nylons which have the band across the top, meant for holding the hosiery without garters and belts.

Choose nylons that are small to get the best fit on your arm. Scoot the band up to above the elbow, then cut the toe end of the stocking off to about the middle knuckle area. Spread fingers apart and add a small amount of fabric glue between each set of fingers. This will separate the fingers on the stocking. Use clothes pins to hold in place until dry.

The gloves can be altered to make varieties of the same. For instance, you can pull the stocking up the arm, to just below the elbow, for a shorter glove that’s made the same way. Or, you can add things to the stocking, like fake cobwebs or tiny rubber spiders.

Use stretch lace to make a different type of glove altogether. Spread your fingers and thumb as far apart as possible. Trace around your hand and cut two pieces - mirror images - and place right sides together. Sew around the glove from one wrist area to the opposite side. Cut the fingers out if you want, or wear them as-is. Or, add a piece of elastic in the wrist area to give you a different look.

That same design can be done with virtually any stretchy fabric. Trying to make the gloves with non-stretchy fabric will only cause you problems. Use stretch satin type fabric instead of lacy material for an even different appearance. Use the same technique of tracing around the hand, unless you want the satin glove to go all the way up the arm.

If you’re making the satin gloves in an arm-length simply trace around the hand, measure your arm from wrist to above the elbow, then draw the measurements onto the fabric. Cut and sew. Hem around the arm band area.
