From its humble beginnings in the 1970's as a simple comic book collectibles show, the San Diego Comic Con has grown into one of the largest single convention events in the U.S., annually drawing over 100,000 attendees.

Held each July at the spacious San Diego Convention Center, Comic Con has evolved into a combination industry trade show, media spectacular, Hollywood event and unparalleled fan gathering.

Conventions events include everything from a massive show floor to film screenings, educational panels, autographs, gaming, art show, etc., etc.

Past celebrity guests have included a diverse array of film, comic and media luminaries, from Jessica Alba to Arnold Schwarzenegger; Ray Bradbury to "Simpson's" creator Matt Groening.

If you are planning to attend, it's vital to make preparations as far in advance as possible. Here are a few insider tips for the best Comic Con experience.

OBTAIN YOUR TICKETS NOW. In 2007, two of the events four days were sold out in advance, and in 2008 NO membership badges will be sold onsite. Tickets are easily ordered online at the convention's official website here.

Can't afford or want to save money on admission? Each year the convention recruits a number of volunteers who will work for a couple of hours in exchange for free admission. Additionally, if you have any connection to the diverse "comic" industry, including gaming, films, writing, etc., etc., you can apply for free professional admission. The key to all of these options is to apply early, however. Check the Comic Con website for application deadlines.

BOOK YOUR LODGING TODAY. Although San Diego is a popular year-round tourist destination and has lots of hotel rooms, most lodging will be sold out well in advance of Comic Con. If you are hoping to stay overnight anywhere near San Diego during the Convention, it's imperative to make hotel reservations as far in advance as possible. The Con's official site lists some hotels, but there are many others to consider. Check popular websites like Travelocity and Hotels.com for all available options.
