How to Tie a Toga
Of the useless skills that I left college with, learning how to tie a toga was one that's managed to stay with me into adulthood. If you're headed out the door to a college fraternity party or need a last minute
Halloween costume, a toga can quickly and easily be thrown together. Once you learn how to tie a toga, you'll turn heads with at that college fraternity party.
Using the flat sheet from a double bed, begin by folding the sheet in half longways. Then, with the folded edge across your waistline, place one corner at your hipbone and wrap the rest of the sheet around your waist from front to back. Be sure to reserve some extra material at your hipbone for use later. You should only use up about half of the length of the sheet when you return to the hipbone that you started at. Re-adjust if this is incorrect.
Next, using the remainder of the material, drape the sheet over the opposite shoulder from the hipbone where you started. There should be enough material for the drape to comfortably cross over your shoulder and then return to the hipbone where you started. You may need to do some maneuvering until this action becomes fluid. Once you get the hang of it, you can be in a toga and ready to go out in a matter of minutes.
This is what many consider the most difficult part--how to tie a toga. But it doesn't need to be rocket science. Simply tie the two ends together tightly at your hipbone. Basically, tie a simple double knot, like you would on shoelaces. If you've allowed enough room in your toga, you should be able to do it with ease. Or, if this proves to be difficult, simply safety pin each end to the inside of the sheet, and no one will be the wiser. In fact, this may provide a more streamlined, form fitting toga.
Finish off your toga with leaves in your hair (head to Michael's for fake leaves or vines that will work perfectly). Drape rope around your waist, and finish the outfit off with brown strappy sandals.
Once you've followed these directions and have learned how to tie the perfect toga, you can head out to that college fraternity party in style!
