Punky Brewster Star Soleil Moon Frye Welcomes Jagger Joseph Blue Goldberg

A Look at Celebrity Baby Names Throughout the Decades

Soleil Moon Frye and husband Jason Goldberg have a new addition to their family: a baby girl born March 17. Newborn Jagger Joseph Blue has one older sister, two-year-old Poet Sienna Rose.

Yes, Jagger Joseph Blue is a girl. Both these names in their entirety seem wordy at best, gender-bending at worst. However, when they are shortened to simply Jagger and Poet, the names are much more manageable and perhaps won't be so confusing. Not many people use their full names in

 their everyday life anyway.

These days it is much more unusual for a celebrity to choose a common name for their child. Let's face it: celebrities enjoy choosing unique baby names. The shock value alone gets their names in the news. Soleil Moon Frye is no trendsetter as this 'trend' has going on for decades.

Celebrity Baby Names from the 1960s and '70s: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan, and Diva Muffin Zappa
Composer, musician, and film director Frank Zappa had very obscure baby names in mind when his children were born. Author and artist Moon Unit, born in 1967, has lived with her strange moniker for 41 years. Musical brothers Dweezil, whose real name is Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa, and Ahmet, are 39 and 34 respectively. Actress Diva Muffin was born in 1979 and will be 29 later this year.

Frank Zappa was known for his unusual jazz music technique as well as his advocation for the freedom of speech. Zappa strove to abolish censorship. He proved his point with his children's names.

Celebrity Baby Names from the 1970s: River, Rain, Joaquin, Libby and Summer Phoenix
The nicknames the Phoenix children are commonly known by aren't all that unusual. But their legal names are. River's actual name was River Jude, Rain is Rainbow Joan of Arc, and Joaquin's first name is Leaf. Libby is short for Liberty Mariposa, and Summer is Summer Joy. River was the oldest child, born in 1970, and Summer is the youngest born in 1978.

The last name Phoenix brings forth images of rocky terrain baking in the hot sun. For this family, names taken from nature make sense.

Great article! I think unique names are excellent. In fact, I made up all my girls' names just so no one else would have their names. My real name (not my pen name) is waaaay too common and after a while it kind of gets old hearing my name everywhere. When I was younger, I actually had 4 friends with the same name. We resorted to calling each other 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 because if anyone said the name, we'd all answer. LOL That was really confusing and I hope my girls never have to go through that.

I think choosing original names for children is nice as long as it's not something that's going to haunt them their entire lives! Fifi Trixibelle had better turn into a beautiful woman to carry off that name~~unfortunately, it sounds more like a name for a dog than a little girl. Great job on this article!

No way? Punky Brewster rocked and so does Soleil by extension. I know some people are quick to make fun of "odd" names, but I think they're the shizzzzzzznit!!!!

Oh, and thanx for not divulging my unusual name, though mine was not bestowed upon me by celebs...

I like your article... Dis I ever tell you if I had been a girl, my name would have been Liberty? And you made remember I had a facination with Frank Zappa in my teens, and I somehow forgot all about his musical tendencies and influences on me... I used to have some of his records...Crazy stuff... Thanx for the info!
