With safe sex preached in recent decades, many individuals, even in monogomous relationships, turn to condom use for pregnancy and prevention against sexually transmitted diseases. Unfortunately, when involved in extended sexual intercourse, while using a condom, some men may experience a painful abrasion commonly known as condom burn. Understanding the symptoms of condom burn, the altnerative forms of contraception and treatment will ensure men are protected from this painful irritation following a sexual encounter.
Symptoms of condom burn, also known as rubber burn, are generally reported as a tender or redness at the tip of the penis following intercourse. Most commonly condom burn occurs in men using latex condoms which become dry following an extended period of sexual intercourse.
To prevent condom burn, many sex health experts recommend utilizing silicone condoms and adding a water based lubricant , such as egg whites, vaginal creams or water, to the inside tip resevoir of the condom so as to ensure prolonged lubrication during intercourse. Using oil based lubricants, such as baby oil, burn ointments or even coconut oil, is not recommended as the integrity of the condom will be compromised, possibly leading to breakage. Additionally, the use of condoms packaged as extra lubricated will ensure the proper leven of lubrication is present while decreasing the incidence of slippage during intercourse. Additionally, the use of flavored condoms is not recommended as the effectiveness is not as prominent as latex or silicone condoms with the additional component of premature dryness which leads to the condom burn so many men suffer.
