If you had to guess where the oldest European settlement in North America is located you probably wouldn't guess that it's in Florida. Before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts and before Jamestown, Virginia was colonized, St. Augustine, Florida was settled. In fact, you may have never even heard of the historic, seaside city of St. Augustine, Florida.

Florida is best known for its miles of beaches, retirement communities and theme parks. Florida, including St. Augustine has much more to offer than the normal activities you may associate with the Sunshine State.

Architectural History of Saint Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine, which has the proud moniker of being "America's Oldest City" dates all the way back to the sixteenth century, 1565 to be exact. According to the City of St. Augustine, it is "the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European origin in the United States."

Walking through the narrow streets of St. Augustine, with its balconied houses, one can see the rich Spanish history in this city's architecture. Although St. Augustine considers itself a modern city, more than 30 original colonial buildings still stand in the Historic Colonial District. In keeping with its historic feel, no fewer than 40 buildings have been reconstructed in a distinctively Spanish colonial style.

Colonial Spanish Quarter
One way to explore the rich history of St. Augustine, Florida is to visit the Colonial Spanish Quarter, a living history museum. Travel back in time to St. Augustine in 1740 and walk amongst Spanish soldiers and their families. Working craftsmen include a leather worker, candle maker, blacksmith, seamstress, and a carpenter. Watch costumed interpreters live life under the rule of the Spanish Empire. The Colonial Spanish Quarter is located on St. George Street, St. Augustine, Florida.

I love St. Augustine. I used to want to go to Flagler College just so that I could live there.
