Barack Obama and the 2008 Election
Somewhere between Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko and Black Liberation Theology, Barack Obama's aspirations for the White House were swamped. Popular opinion polls and political tracking polls show Senator Obama dropping like a rock to the bottom of a pond. What to do?
I'm pretty certain Senator Obama and his supporters are all for continuing on, and I can't blame them, but this is the point where political futures merge with political desires and I don't see any way short of withdrawing from the campaign for the Senator to have any chance to salvage his career if he wants to reach the Presidency someday.
As long as he remains in this Primary fight the controversies will continue to dog him. These issues are not a passing blurb in the 24/7 news cycle. They are issues of the utmost importance; they will frame this race from this point to the end, and they will define Obama as long as he remains in the public eye at this time. And time is the only thing on Senator Obama's side - it's a detriment at this point, as there is not enough of it to shake these issues, but time is to his advantage if he has patience.
Senator Obama is 46 years old. If he were to withdraw from this race, he has to only wait four years to try again, and he would only be 50 years old, and trust me, that's young, especially for the Presidency. And in those waning four years the senator will benefit in many ways.
He will acquire four years more experience. He will have a leg up on any other Democrat that wants to run for the 2012 nomination, unless Hillary wins the 2008 election, and if that's the case he could either wait 'til 2016, or he could challenge her if she wins in '08 and runs for re-election in 2012. Either way he is the front runner and heir apparent for the next opening in the Democrat Party.
