Trucker Shutdown Could Be a Reality - May 1, 2008

There is beginning to be a constant stream of chatter over the Internet and at truck stops throughout the nation about an impending trucker shutdown on May 1, 2008 although some are calling for an earlier shutdown.

The issue for truckers is primarily the upward spiral in the cost of diesel fuel which has the effect of substantially reducing their income. Owner-operators in many cases are not making enough profit to pay the costs of operating their vehicles. The cost of a big rig can easily surpass
$100,000 without including the costs associated with maintaining a safe vehicle and complying with a myriad of federal regulations. There are many other regulatory issues which truckers face that demand examination and the wheels of government turn slowly while truckers are expected to continue working while they wait.

Owner-operators of small trucking firms make up the majority of trucks that move freight about our nation and America is dependent upon their efforts. Some companies have already reportedly began their truck shutdown.

According to talk on the Internet the purpose of the trucker shutdown is simply to focus attention on the importance of trucking to the American economy and to request help through some relief from the federal fuel tax for big rigs (Class 8 trucks) transiting the highways. Since this is an election year, several truckers state that it would seem beneficial to have the Presidential candidates weigh in with their views. One web blog at http://uscattlehaulers.com/ states that Senator Clinton's office has been in-touch with them seeking details about the trucker shut down.

The Quad-City Times (http://www.qctimes.com/articles/2008/03/18/news/iowa/doc47e03e9ea03bd427238845.txt?sPos=1) is also reporting on the potential for a trucker shutdown.

FOX affiliate WGXA (http://www.fox24.com/article.asp?pkid=11489) in Macon Georgia reports that at least one small trucking company has been joined by a number of owner-operators who have shutdown their trucks in an attempt to get some government attention on their plight.

I have been trying to get the word out to everyone I can , about the may1-8th shutdown and I agree totally . I was recently independant with MAMO Transportation out of Oceola,In. and had to leave the driveaway business because the fuel prices were causing me to go into the hole . How many other's like me have had enough I am not a ROOKIE I have been in trucking for 20+ year's and i think it's time for us to be herd. I think we should get a raise also why do we make less money than other profession's and yet we bring everything to the people. As My fictional brother would say WAKE UP A M E R I C A ! ! ! ! ! !

Supposedly 60% of fuel taxes in this country are used for road and bridge construction, and the rest goes to unrelated issues (at least, according to wikipedia). If this is the case, then I think Larry's got the right idea. Why not throw back that 40%, or at least use it to drive innovation by funding programs that will produce more efficient internal combustion engines?

You know if the government really wanted to help us all out here they could roll back the taxes on gas and diesel. As the price has gone up the state and federal governments have collected more money because they get a percentage of the sale price. If they each agreed to give up the increase they have gotten since this time last year it could knock a quarter off of the price of a gallon of gas.

Gas prices are just going to keep rising as supply dwindles off, unless we can somehow reduce the demand. Already new technologies are coming out that can increase a diesel's fuel efficiency by 20-30%. Hydrogen boosting diesel engines, for example, increases the overall efficiency of combustion and can double mileage. What we really need to see are aftermarket kits for the trucks that can be installed right away. It's just too bad this technology wasn't available ten or even twenty years ago.

Time to stock up on your groceries folks. As a former truck driver I can attest to the fact that the high cost of fuel is driving the small mom and pop truckers out of business. You gotta make a stand somewhere. Personally, I think I'll start by adding more to my already 5 gardens and canning and freezing more of my food. I'm on the truckers side of this one folks! Hang in there!

OBEY ALL LAWS. REFUSE TO SUPPORT DRIVERS WHO VIOLATE THE LAW! PUT SIGNS ON YOUR TRUCK THAT WILL CALL ATTENTION TO YOUR CAUSE & THE REAL ISSUES! SOME SUGGESTED SIGNS.... HIGH FUEL COSTS = AMERICAN JOBS LOST! IS YOUR JOB SAFE? HIGH FUEL COSTS = HIGH FOOD COSTS. CAN YOU AFFORD TO EAT? HIGH $$$ DIESEL + JOBS LOST = HOME FORECLOSURES IF YOU HAVE IT, A TRUCK BROUGHT IT! CAN YOU AFFORD TO HAVE MORE? I'VE SLOWED DOWN TO CONSERVE HIGH PRICED FUEL. HAVE YOU? TRUCKS DELIVER EVERYTHING BUT BABIES, BUT WE DID DELIVER THE HOSPITAL!

the rest of it THIS IS NOT A STRIKE OR WORK STOPPAGE! THIS IS NOT AN ATTEMPT TO ORGANIZE TRUCK DRIVERS. THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL FOR THE U.S. CITIZEN TO EXAMINE A SYSTEM SO OUT OF BALANCE THAT OUR POLITICIANS & NATIONAL MEDIA REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE & EXAMINE THE ISSUES. AS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO HOLD YOUR GOVERNMENT RESPONSIBLE & URGE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME! THIS WILL BE EACH AND EVERY COMPANY OWNER/MANAGER & DRIVER LOOKING IN THE MIRROR, SAYING WITH SINCERITY, "THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME OR MY BUSINESS. THIS IS ABOUT MY COUNTRY! THIS IS MY OWN PROTEST!" AS YOU SHARE THIS WITH OTHERS - OTHER DRIVERS, OTHER CITIZENS - BE PURSASIVE, NOT ABRASIVE! TALK ABOUT WHAT THIS IS DOING TO THE COUNTRY, NOT WHAT IT'S DOING TO YOUR FINANCES! MANY TRUCKS WILL SIMPLY BE PARKED AT HOME DURING THESE DATES. MANY WILL BE ON THE ROAD. THOSE ON THE ROAD ARE URGED TO MAKE THEIR OWN PROTEST BY DRIVING NOT MORE THAN 45 MPH ON ALL HIGHWAYS & BY WAYS.

Posted on 03/30/2008 at 3:03:38 PM

Its a Protest.. NOT a STRIKE..Nothing Illegal.. You should see these flyers in your local truck stops and also on the net.. THE TIME IS NOW! APRIL 1, 2008 THROUGH APRIL 5, 2008, HEADING NORTH, SOUTH, EAST & WEST, KEEP IT AT 35 TO 45 MPH IN PROTEST OF OUR NATION'S ECONOMIC CONDITIONS! DO NOT DO THIS IN PROTEST OF THE HARD TIMES TRUCKERS ARE EXPERIENCING! DO THIS IN PROTEST OF THE HARD TIMES ALL U.S. CITIZENS ARE EXPERIENCING DUE TO THE HIGH COST OF DIESEL! THE SLOW ECONOMY COMBINED WITH RISING DIESEL COST HAS PLACED OUR ECONOMY IN A FREEFALL THAT IS AFFECTING ALL AMERICANS! THIS PROTEST IS TO MAKE THE AVERAGE U.S. CITIZEN AWARE OF HOW THE COST OF DIESEL AFFECTS THEIR DAILY LIVES - TO MAKE THEM AWARE THAT THE MORTGAGE CRISIS, JOB LOSSES, RISING FOOD PRICES ARE LINKED DIRECTLY TO THE HIGH PRICE OF DIESEL. THIS IS NOT A STRIKE OR WORK STOPPAGE! THIS IS NOT AN ATTEMPT TO ORGANIZE TRUCK DRIVERS. THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL FOR THE U.S. CITIZE
