Credit cards have almost become a necessity in today's world. And while they can make life much easier at times, credit card balances can also get away from you in a hurry if you're not careful. So, what can you do if you find yourself getting in trouble?

If you're anything like most Americans, you've most likely, been carrying a sizeable balance on your credit cards. Credit card debt is a serious problem today and most people simply choose to bury their heads in the sand and hope it goes away. The fact is the balances won't go away anytime soon.

Here's a great example of what I am saying. Let's take a balance of $2,500 on a credit card with a 21% interest rate. By making the minimum monthly payment, and never using the card in the future, it will take 313 months to pay it all off. That's over 26 years! And that is just one card with a $2,500 balance. That should get your attention.

In order to get credit card debt under control you're going to have to make a decision, and a commitment, to change your habits. It may not be easy at first, but the results will be more than worth it in the long run.

Stop Using Your Credit Cards
This is the most difficult part of getting started. You're going to have to stop using your credit cards, even if it means tearing them up. If you don't have the cash on hand to make the purchase, then don't make the purchase. That may seem harsh, but it will take discipline to get your finances back under control. You can't continue to do the things you've always done and expect different results.

Put Yourself On A Financial Diet
Now that you have put away the credit cards, the next step is to get on a budget, or financial diet as I like to put it.

Take the time to sit down and write out your debts and due dates. Set up a weekly and monthly plan to pay your bills. You will need to change your spending habits and priorities to accomplish your goals. Again, it requires discipline, but you can do it.

Talk With Creditors
If you have found yourself in a big hole with your credit card debt, and having trouble paying your monthly statement, the best thing you can do is talk with the credit card companies.

Takeaways
  • Making the minimum monthly payments on credit card balances will take years to pay off.
  • The key to getting your finances under control is to stop using your credit cards
  • Talk with your creditors and work out more favorable payment arrangements
