Having been a small business owner for more than 13 years now, I know that marketing a small business can be one of the most time-consuming aspects of running a business, but without marketing, it's tough to get clients or customers. Since clients and customers are what make your business profitable, it stands to reason that marketing is essential for the success and growth of a small business.

Over the years, I've learned a lot about marketing and promoting a small business, both from trial and error and reading everything I could find on the subject. This article will summarize the top 10 small business marketing tips I have learned.

Small Business Marketing Tip No. 1 - Network, Network, Network

There is just no way around it, networking is key to marketing a small business. Who you know, who they know and who knows you and your business can make all the difference. The best advertising any business can get is word-of-mouth.

Small Business Marketing Tip No. 2 - Become an Expert

Read, study, learn and know your business and its industry better than your competition, and share that knowledge so others know. Share your expertise in your field via marketing articles, a professional Web site with information, pod or webcasts or telephone seminars so your clients or customers can see you know your stuff.

Small Business Marketing Tip No. 3 - Know your Consumer

Be your own customer, put yourself in their shoes and look at your small business like a potential client or customer would view it, and not like someone in the industry. Perhaps you're too close to your own small business to see it the way a consumer would, so ask friends, family or business associates to give you critical and honest feedback from the perspective of a client, and then use that feedback to best benefit the consumer.

Small Business Marketing Tip No. 4 - Make Time to Market

Takeaways
  • Marketing keeps you in front of your customers' eyes, so they remember your business.
  • Learning to properly market your business can bring about repeat business and new business.
  • Small businesses need marketing and promotion to be successful.

Great info, M! This all works in a small home-based business, too, though word of mouth tends to take a prominent position when you're doing automotive bodywork out of your garage. Having been doing it for a little while, I can't even begin to say how vital it is to keep up your reputation through positive word of mouth. Marketing works in business on every scale, and it doesn't even have to cost anything!

Word-of-Mouth advertising must be managed well too. It magnifies when it goes negative. Good piece.

Great article! I have a small business and appreciate all the info or help i can get. to allow my business to get out there in the public. Recently, I joined a great site called KANTABiZ.com. A business video directory allowing me a video advertised presence on the net. KANTABiZ.com allows only business videos but that makes sense to somebody like me. There are lots of places on the net with just pure leisure time viewing etc.. some crap too. But KANTABiZ.com is angeled at the business approach only, which i liked a lot., and its free. I see it as an opportunity on the web for my business and thats important plus its video. hooray! My busines profile on kantabiz: http://www.kantabiz.com/videos.php?vp=2&id=90 Hope it helps other business owners too. bye guys.

Michelle, These are exellent tips! As the owner of a (very) small business, a small literary niche press, I love every bit of wisdom you have offered here, and I find that I have had to learn a lot of these bits of truth the hardway. Thanks for putting it into an article, so others can learn simply by reading.
