If you are looking for a beautiful destination to spend a few days or a few weeks, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is the place to go. There are many charming nuances that make this a wonderful vacation spot. For example, go downtown to Lake Coeur d’Alene and take a ride on the seaplane. You will enjoy an aerial view of the massive lake and adjacent mountain, as well as some of the other sites that only the air can provide. Coeur d’Alene is rich in history; you can learn how this lake was instrumental during World War II. The lake is so deep that it was secretly used by the U.S. Military to conduct covert submarine testing. It was private, and enabled the government to test operational maneuvers. Who would suspect submarines being tested in Idaho?!
Also at Lake Coeur d’Alene is Tubbs Hill. Put your climbing shoes on and head on a winding climb up the hill. Look out over the majestic lake as you get a work out. Watch the locals teenagers jump off the cliff into the lake, probably 150-foot jump known as “little Acapulco” by the longtime residents. Feeling adventurous? You can take a turn, after the hike, you may be ready to be cooled off.
There is still more to do at Lake Coeur d’Alene. Bring your bathing suit and beach chair and enjoy the shore. Like any beach, the water washes up and has a gentle decline where you can swim or wade. The long dock for the seaplane divides the beach to give each side a secluded feeling.
If you enjoy festivals of various kinds, be sure to check the Chamber of Commerce website (www.cdachamber.com/) or the Visitors Bureau (www.cdachamber.com/). The calendar shows something going on almost every night of the week. You can attend the weekend they have Balloon fest, Blue Grass Drag Race, or the Iron Man Triathlon, just to name a few. Depending on you hobby, your vacation plans may get a little sweeter by including your favorite pastime with your vacation.
