When people think of dog sledding, Alaska immediately comes to mind. But, you need not journey all the way to our most northern state to experience the thrill of dog sledding—a mushing adventure lies much closer at hand in Michigan!

For both recreation and racing, dog sledding is a fast growing sport. Contrary to popular belief, you won’t be shouting “mush” to the dogs. That’s only in the movies. You can however be a musher, and the commands will more likely be typical words we all understand such as left, right, easy and hike.

If movies are evidence, people are fascinated by dog sledding. Balto and Snow Dogs are two films featuring the sport. You’ve got to love Balto, the lead dog on the final leg of the 1925 serum run. Dog sledding was the only way to get the diphtheria medicine from Anchorage to Nome in an effort to combat an outbreak of the disease. Thanks to mushers and their dogs, lives were saved.

There were other mushers and dogs in that brave effort, (twenty teams is the number usually cited) but it’s Balto who got the glory. The run is commemorated by the annual Iditarod dog sled race. Still getting attention to this day, Balto is honored with statues in both New York City and Anchorage, Alaska.

In the Midwest, dog sled opportunities for the public can be found in Michigan, particularly in the Upper Peninsula Rides are available to suit every taste. You can opt for a fifteen minute tour for those who want a quick experience to several hours or even overnight for rugged, snow-loving souls. There’s more - you can watch thrilling races, learn musher lingo and drive the team, if you so desire.

Many dog sled operators in Michigan are happy to customize trips, allowing you to select the length and type of trip desired. Don’t hesitate to ask.

Dog sledding is a fun alternative to motorized travel and you’ll have bragging rights for winters to come.
