The Akita: Just a Big Ole Teddy Bear

Have you decided against getting a new dog because they are too loud, smelly and unpredictable? Maybe you have decided that you want a big dog but because of your living arrangement, that's out of the question. All of these problems can be solved with the Akita. Let's look at these problems one at a time.

Problem One - Size

Many people who live in an apartment would like to get a big dog but because of the amount of time required for exercise, a large breed is not an option. The Akita solves this problem. The American Kennel Club classifies the Akita as a working breed, primarily because of its size - 70-100 pounds for the female and 100-130 pounds for the male. But, unlike other breeds of the same size, Akita's require much less exercise. Problem one - solved.

Problem Two - Unpredictable

Most of the larger breeds have acquired, through no fault of their own, the reputation of being aggressive and unpredictable. Rottweillers, Doberman Pinchers and German Shepherds sometimes get this reputation. Akitas rarely fall into this category, despite their large size. Their temperament is usually easy-going and laid back. This makes the Akita a good family pet. Problem two - solved.

Problem Three - Barking Incessantly

Barking incessantly is the number one reason most people decide against getting a new dog. With the Akita, barking for the sake of barking is not a problem. Akitas have the reputation of only barking when there is a good reason to bark. When an Akita barks, you had better pay attention. Something is most likely wrong. Problem three - solved.

Problem Four - Dogs Smell

Well of course dogs smell. But most humans do as well. But humans have the ability to bathe when necessary...dogs do not. The "smelly" issue is an issue not specific to the Akita. As long as they are bathed on a regular basis, the smell can be controlled. Problem four - solved.
