I saw this coming a mile away. Although he managed to capture the attention of a nation starving for new leadership and a way out of the social, economic and political morass America now finds itself in, I knew it would only be a matter of time before the luster would begin to fade from Barack Obama's coat of amor. The round-the-clock scrutiny and vicious attacks launched by the media last week, which is more than likely to continue, has done serious damage to both the candidate and the man. The saddest part is he is being held accountable for the actions of another person that exercised a Constitutional right, whether America likes it or not. Moreover, Obama is feeling the heat because he had the audacity to man-up and not play the role of the prototypical asshole candidate. With his balls of steel firmly on display, he went before the nation to address an issue that has the potential to become a political and social powder keg as the November election draws near. That issue is race.

Polls, which I hate, alleged that an astounding 80 percent of Americans watched the historic March 18 speech. All eyes were glued to television sets at home, places of business and even the large projection screen in New York City's Times Square. The situation was eerily reminiscent and frighteningly similar to another period in America, October 3, 1995, when the issue of race seized the national spotlight: the O.J. Simpson trial. I soon realized that an enormous television audience wasn't the only thing these two incidents had in common. As is the case with Simpson to this day, many feel that Barack Obama is innocent of any wrongdoing. They feel Obama should not be held responsible for acts committed by someone else, as others did, particularly in the black community, once Los Angeles Police Detective Mark Fuhrman became part of the "Trial of the Century".

Takeaways
  • Obama's situation is eerily reminiscent and frighteningly similar to the O.J. Simpson trial.
  • Conservative talk-show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity have criticized Obama's speech.
  • ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX & MSNBC are all guilty of reverting to tactics used during the Simpson trial.
Did You Know?
An astounding 80 percent of Americans watched "The Speech", which was delivered by Senator Barack Obama on March 18, 2008.

...but Governor Rendell can be called now. But it was not from a reputable news source and I think that was decided earlier when she had her name removed as defendant in the case. Because it involves her prior FEC non-disclosure and both Clintons have had shady fund raising dealings (such as the sudden donations of $2,300. via money orders from Chinatown dishwashers, some who could not be located via the listed legal document address and others saying they were unaware they contributed, and some not legal citizens and others barely spoke English) it seems this would make headline news. Reminds me of how Bill forbid any reporting of the Flowers lawsuit while he was campaigning and Hillary stood by his side when it made the press.

I read, but could not confirm that it was a Hillary grudge with Imus, that got the ball rolling in getting Imus canned. Media Matters seems to be part of her team. If they were fair they would have lead the citizens to can some of those TV media, I keep hearing about for their biased stuff. That the press refuses to report on the Clinton lawsuit, has me believing they do have the power to control media. Even tho' I do not watch TV, I have contacted TV stations and other online news media about fairness to the public by keeping us informed. Especially the Los Angeles times, who's reporters can take a quick trip to the court house and report on the proceedings. I can not afford to buy the exact court transcripts on the case; that is what reporters are supposed to do: report the news. What transpired on 4/25 and 5/13? I read that the judge decided Hillary can not be called to testify until after November...

"By the way, did I mention most of these media outlets are grossly devoid of people of color in their newsrooms and high level, decision-making positions?" Odd, I guess, but that is one of the main reasons I stopped watching television. You asked 'then why do the networks". I guess because they are playing for ratings and the more controversial something is, the more viewers they get. That can be proven right here at AC. Positive articles about Senator Obama get few views, and few comments. Mention Wright and his Black Nationalist church and 700 comments and counting. Then there were the quick articles about Obama's speech: I am not buying it, why is he turning this into a race issue, he was with him for 20 years, he lies... And Bill Clinton announced Obama is a fairy tale; Hillary said he is "just words" and the Clintons seem to own the media.

This is where journalists like us step in and balance out the news with facts. Great article.

LOL...so tell me how you REALLY feel! Great article!! As pertains to Obama and Wright...the former does not have to answer for the words or actions of the latter any more than vice versa; what Obama does need to answer for, however, is why he was able to be a member of the congregation for 20 years and just now realizes that *oops* there are racist comments being made. With regards to the Simpsonization (a great term) ... let's hope very, very fervently that nobody comes out a-rhyming like "if the gloves don't fit, you must aquit".

Hey, Obama won Iowa. That's a beautiful thing, says America is looking at the person, not the color. Obama is gonna win this thang.... IMHO.

Huckabee defended Wright; Catholic Priests and Rabbi's have rushed to the defense of Wright and Obama. Only time will tell how this one plays out. The difference between Simpson and Obama is public opinion is not spit along ethnic lines this time. Some black Christians are spouting anger and hate at Wright and Obama, whereas many white Christians think it no big deal. I do not remember such an uproar during a primary. Republicans know Hillary will be a win for McCain and now that the Clintons have tarnished Obama, it looks like Obama could be a win for McCain also.

Hillary has somehow managed to convince her followers that Obama steals her ideas, that she is going to fight her special interest groups in DC and Obama thinks he can wave a magic wand to make them disappear and she knows it will take hard work. Even here on AC they parrot whatever they have been told. One writer said something like: Obama you are not going to tap dance your way around this one. Our AC CP stole the line straight from a news report I recently read. You see. Not "waltz your way" but an offensive analogy. He may be the same one that months ago wrote: Obama is a fairy tale. I believe Wright has a good defamation of character and maybe copyright violation lawsuit. What was Wright's big crime? I did watch the sermon they lifted the G-D America line from. Hardly worth batting an eye about when seen in context . The only good news is even some people that do not support Obama are disgusted with the media.

White people are outraged that he called his poor grandma a closet racist when she is not here to defend herself. (She is alive and well in HI and if they listened to the darn speech....aargh). In the meantime no one is talking about the Peter Paul versus Bill Clinton (CA would not allow him to name Hillary in the lawsuit) retrial that is maybe scheduled to start mid-October and no one is questioning the legality of a "buy one get one free" 3rd term for Bill, who was impeached and should under no circumstances be allowed back in the White House. Only Obama has mentioned that we are short on troops~confirmed by his Iraqi war vet supporters and everyone knows Obama would not be where he is except that he is black and millions of white people "got caught up in the concept". Huh? Oops. I forgot Ferraro and Clinton think it is only black people that vote for him.

I do not watch TV and did not even watch the speech online later. I read the transcript. Perhaps because I read both of Obama's books and have listened to a lot of his speeches, it did not sound all that "brilliant" to me. Just the same stuff he has been saying for quite a while now if people were listening. He did spice it up a bit. If it were not for my experience with the KKK and habit of sometimes visiting Storm Front get a pulse on moods of the people, I might start enjoying this political side show. It appears a McCain staffer got fired for creating the mash-up, a station is airing the entire 9/16/01 Wright sermon~how many white people you know have actually heard a black preacher's sermons? How many will tune in? How will the media pick it apart? Will they now defend Wright? The counter attack on Hannity has begun; his association with someone~Turner, I think~that used to offer info on how to make bombs to, um, you know, blow up black people and immigrants.
