The next time you buy art to decorate a room, consider ditching the paint-by-numbers garbage you'll find at the local mall. Everyone has seen those pictures before. A wolf standing in a snowy field... James Dean leaning on a car, with light bulbs embedded in the canvas... these will only leave your guests yawning.

Such images will teach your children that art is a tacky necessity for filling empty space.

Instead, why not invest in some ethnic art?

Have you ever run your hands over a Native American headdress or hand-woven blanket? Or stepped into a room filled with images of Spanish vistas painted in rich oil colors?

Great art should make you question what you know. It should evoke mixed emotions. If you are going to buy art, why not buy something worth looking at?

Why buy ethnic art?
Ethnic art is especially engaging. It confronts you with the beliefs of an entirely different culture, and makes you ask, "Who are these people?" Such art will enrich you in ways you hadn't imagined and provide far more value and enjoyment than familiar commercial images.

A print of Indian nobles riding elephants will grab a visitor's attention. Kids will imagine they are riding elephants and wonder what it is like to live in India.

Perhaps those who view such art will be intrigued to learn more about the culture such art represents.

Why not inspire your household?

How to find great art
We live in the information age. You can buy art online. Thus, there are no excuses for the cliche images hanging on your walls.

Open Google, and search on "buy art" or "ethnic art for sale" and you will find what you are looking for. Search for images that grab and hold your attention. Some may be disturbing, but you should ask yourself why you are bothered. Often such questions will reveal much that you didn't know about yourself. That is what good art should do, and ethnic art will almost always engage you by presenting cultural clashes.

If the prices of original works make you think twice, look for prints instead. Often artists will have personal websites to showcase their work, and will sell prints as a means of income.
