Health Insurance - Life Without Health Insurance

Two years ago I didn't have health insurance. I was working at my job for a year. It was a contract job. It was very expensive for me to get individual insurance through a insurance company so I decided not to get it. Six months later I had a breakdown and had to be admitted in the hospital. My bill was around $3000. I was devastated. At least I was able to seek psychiatric services and obtain medication for free through a county facility. I still had to pay the hospital bill on my own. I started making payments and borrowed some money to pay it off. I disputed the bill with the argument that I didn't have insurance and couldn't afford it. I was denied. While I was recovering I couldn't hold down a job. I applied to insurance companies to get health coverage was denied because of my pre-existing condition and because I was admitted to the hospital. I was devastated again. I was able to find a insurance company by the State that insured people like me. I now have insurance through them and also am able to work part time without benefits and go to school full time. I also have the option of getting a full time and get benefits. I was angry that I was unable to get health coverage because of my condition or that I was in a hospital. Health insurance should not be so hard to get.
