Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death amongst American women over the age of 40. The best defense against breast cancer and most other forms of cancer is to detect it early. If breast cancer is detected early it is a lot easier to treat. A great way for women to protect themselves against breast cancer is by having a breast exam on a regular basis. If you’re a woman over the age of 40 you should get a mammogram done annually to detect whether or not you have breast cancer. A clinical breast examination (CBE) should also be done annually by a health professional if you’re over the age of 40, it is best to take it around the time you take your mammogram. A CBE does not have to be done as often as a mammogram it only has to be done once every 2-3 years.

Another way to decrease your chances of getting breast cancer is by not smoking cigarettes. Health researchers have estimated that almost 50 percent of women are sensitive to carcinogens which are found in tobacco. This sensitivity leads to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is a great way to prevent breast cancer because of the antioxidant vitamins and other nutrients that help prevent cancer. Eating foods that are high in phytoestrogen help prevent breast cancer, it can be found in soy products such as tofu, edamame, roasted soy nuts, foods such as flaxseed and whole grains also contain high contents of phytoestrogen. Drinking alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer just as cigarettes do, to prevent the increase of breast cancer it is a good idea to cut back on your alcoholic intake or to quit.
