Thanksgiving Pilgrim Drinking Straw Craft Project
Easy and Affordable Thanksgiving Craft Project
Kids love straws and this craft project is the perfect way to add a Thanksgiving touch to their dinks. Each Pilgrim straw should cost you less than $4 to make, which makes this a great craft project for a groups of kids.To Make a Pilgrim Straw Craft Project You Will Need:
Construction Paper
Laminating Plastic
Scissors
Glue
Exacto Knife
Googly eyes (Optional)
Have the kids draw out their pilgrims on brown constructions paper. The pilgrim should be about four to five inches tall. This should be the head, arms, body and feet, sort of like a paper doll. Go ahead and cut the shape out in one piece. .
I like to cut additional details out of other colors of construction paper. For instance, use white paper to cut out an apron and red paper to cut out lips. Cut out a small round face and hands as well. Layer these pieces correctly onto the brown body of the pilgrim. This is sort of like creating a paper doll out of pieces of colored paper. Do not make any eyes. They will be added later.
Use a glue stick or regular white glue to attach your layers of colored paper. Do not put too much white glue; you don’t want it to ooze out from underneath the layers. The laminating plastic will hold everything in place eventually, so use as little glue as possible.
Once the glue has dried lay your pilgrim in between your laminating plastic. Once it has been laminated and cooled cut your pilgrim out. Tell the kids to leave a small bit of clear plastic around the edge of the pilgrim. I find that at least 1/8 of an inch works well.
Glue the googly eyes on to the face of the pilgrim; directly on top of the laminating plastic.
Cut a small horizontal slit right above the stomach and below the shoulders. Do not make the cut too close to the sides of the pilgrim.
Repeat an identical cut about 1 to 11/2 inches below the first cut. Both should be horizontal.
Slide you straw in through the slits in the middle of the pilgrim.
Told you it was easy and affordable!
