Tame Cockatiels Require a Tremendous Amount of Attention

If you are a lover of birds, in particularly cockatiels, one of the most important things to remember is their tremendous desire for your attention and the need for it.

If you spend a great deal of time away from home, either on vacation, or a number of other places, then getting a cockatiel is not something that you should consider.

These beautiful and sometimes noisy little creatures crave a large amount of attention to be had from their owners. They cannot thrive and do well if they are in an environment where very little attention will be given to them. Many times a cockatiel that is left alone for any length of time, he will become nervous and bored. When cockatiels do this, they resort to plucking their own feathers out from their bodies.

This is a very sad situation and is certainly not something any bird owner would want to see. Cockatiels will also become finicky eaters if they lack the large amount of attention that is so important to their well being. A finicky cockatiel almost always ends up in a very unfortunate death.

If you have recently received a cockatiel that is tame, then it will not take you very long at all before you realize the little critter will demand your undivided attention. This can give both you and your feathered friend many hours of enjoyment. You might be very surprised at finding just how attached you can become to your cockatiel. In turn, your cockatiel will also feel very close to you, sometimes seeming to think you are its parent.

If you have an extremely needy bird, you need to make certain your little friend knows you care for him, and at least receives some of your undivided attention. However, it is ok to put him in his cage to go about your daily routine, without fear of him killing over.

Generally, he will get used to your routine, and it is even recommended to keep some sort of routine with the little fellow. This is not to say that he won't scream and squawk at you, in his persistent attempt to gain your affection just a little while longer. In time though, he will soon become accustomed to you and your routine.
